The well done David Cameron thread on 08:34 - May 9 by dgt73 | Oh hang on a minute.... We can't blame labour for the banking crisis, because it was a global problem, yet its the cons fault for the loss of industry in South Wales and nothing to do with global markets.....? |
The reason the Tories crushed the unions and as a consequence were responsible for the loss of so many jobs in the UK in the 1980's was as a reaction to the stance taken by unions in the '70's. Nothing at all to do with goods being available cheaper from other countries. The banking crisis was global, financial institutions throughout the first world lent too much money in the good times, then got caught out when the markets fell apart

You can't dismiss the fact that, it would have been impossible to keep the mines open.....because the markets dried up......even the large coal powered, power stations in this country have been using cheaper foreign coal.

Cheaper because foreign coal was subsidised.

You are not listening, foreign exports into this country where subsidised by their Governments, the head of the EU was going nuts at the time because our coal field was more economical than coal fields in Western Europe, yet Maggie was closing our coal field while less economic coal from France and Germany was being subsidised by their Governments. The main man in the EU didn't want un-economical coal fields on his patch kept open and our more economical coal field closed down. Lots of our mines were not economical, but as Tower showed (they wanted it closed) lots of our mines were economical, the workers continued to run it for years . [Post edited 10 May 2015 9:31]

The mines were past their sell by date I'm afraid. If it didn't happen in the 80's it would have happened in the 90's.

Tower ran till 2008 until it was worked out, some equipment and men went to Aberpergwm after that. I have heard it said that some of the largest coal reserves in Western Europe for Anthracite are under the mountain above Cwmgwrach . Wales is rich in natural resources, coal, slate, wind, water, tides even the purest gold in the World, an independent Wales could be the business.

Tower was one mine.....out of many in South Wales and in the end has closed. What do you want to do with the coal, no one uses it anymore.....power stations are moving away from it and even power stations with carbon capture are still producing to much c02.

Tower was one and Aberpergwm another both I could walk to from where I am from if I was of a mind to, unity in the the valley of the witch was also going until recently if not still going would be walking distance also. Coal is still used in Britain, plus coal is used overseas.

There was a big market for it at the time of the closures and many pits were viable at that time and even today there is still a market for coal.

So we could have kept them open a bit longer, maybe.....but the result would have been the same.

Even if we had kept them open for just five or ten years more, those years would mean British profits going into British pockets as wages being spent on British High Steet's, creating more jobs in Britain. It's not rocket science, but you seem intent in sticking up for a Government that was blatantly against the British working man Then after wiping out the jobs in our localities, you had morons like Tebbit telling people to get on their bikes. Horrible, horrible people

It's not that long. The use of coal has more or less finished a long time ago.

It is the span of many Governments and not far off a full career for an employee, it affected entire local communities and not just those employed in mining, closing our coal industry down in a short space of time was at a huge cost to the country when it could have been managed and staged over decades to the financial advantage of mining communities and the country.

A coal mine is a finite resource, they get worked out, they don't last forever, there is working a mine out and then there is closing a mine before its worked out.

Because Thatcher closed profitable mines down that were not worked out and had easily accessible reserves.

Thatcher used the miners as a political tool to incite violence and enable her anti-union legislation. Scargill, the utter fool that he is, fell straight into her trap.

The well done David Cameron thread on 12:49 - May 10 with 932 views | trampie | Welsh miners should have had a separate Welsh union, Englishman Scargill was not to be trusted, he would not do what was best for Welsh workers, the Welsh need to be in charge of their own destiny as much as possible.
