Will labour ever get back into power? 10:52 - Dec 23 with 18160 viewsmrrockin

I've been following the recent labour news with amusement and a bit of sadness (yes genuinely) - it's painfully obvious that the tories are going to win an increased majority possibly even a landslide in 2020.

By this point the left of labour will have a stranglehold over labour and this will mean there is no hope for the right of labour which closely mirrors the early 80's with the breakaway of the SDP.

Personally I believe the likes of Denis Healey made a mistake and the moderates should have left on mass to join the SDP and leave the socialists to keep the red flag flying high. Maybe as CB has long argued it is time for a voting change.

I was very skeptical about voting change but I personally thought the coalition largely did a superb job and I was disappointed it didn't continue in many ways. I largely support this Gov but I'm more in the centre so I'd prefer the right wingers to be more restrained which the coalition provided.

My point is that under the present system labour will never recover and it might be time for a realignment to take place in British politics.

Labour first introduced it for private sector tenants. You know me well enough to know that I don't defend Labour blindly. Please tell Bluey, it's always his first response to me. I didn't agree with it then and I don't now. In the case of council tenants especially these aren't just houses, they're long standing family homes. The policy is cack handed, wrong and disproportionately disadvantages those who can least afford it. Again.

May well be long standing homes but at the end of the day the tenants don't own them.

Where council housing is given, it should be based purely upon need and requirements. That's the whole point - it's meant to help people not give a home for life with no strings attached.

Where there is restricted stock, irrespective of the reason for that, staying in a property that has outgrown your changing needs when there is a queue of people in even worse situations that could be helped by having that property is plain selfish.

Used to vote LibDem.

The liberals actually did pretty well in Government, the orange books liberals were onto something the soggy bottom liberals held them back and the tories took all the credit.

Tories played a blinder.

T'was a tad ironic that Dr Cable, the most vociferous critic of the Tories was booted out by his constituents, yet Clegg got off scot free. Politics - bloody hell!

That's because he misjudged the electorate, the coalition was actually pretty popular as I said at the time and was laughed at when I said I thought the tories would win or at the very least form another coalition.

If they had held firm and took ownership for some of the good stuff they would have probably got over the line for another go. So when things turned around the tories got the credit, no shock. Cable was such a useful idiot to the tories.

I honestly cant see them getting into power for at least 10 years it saddens me to say, unless there was some major crisis just before an election and the Tories screw up...

The EU referendum is Ground Zero for Cameron. If he can keep his party together through that it'll be a near miracle. Same for Corbyn too, although it's less of an issue there.

The hard Labour left used to be very anti-EU. Is that Corbyn's position?

Genuinely have no idea.

The way things are going the deficit will not be reduced despite of all their promises and cuts against the most vulnerable. They'll make such a mess of it the only viable alternative WILL be Labour.

Osborne has no interest in paying off the debt or the deficit. I'd suggest it's unpayable, and was always designed as such. It's a centuries old scam. Still, he'll use it to justify selling off whatever is actually left of any state assets into private hands.

If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face--forever.

So let me get this straight, because they haven't hit deficit targets you will vote for a party who will spend and borrow more.

Riiight.

Osbourne borrowed more in the first three years of the coalition than labour did in their thirteen years in power. Just saying.

That just makes you look a bit thick my friend.

What did you expect Osborne to do cut 150bn in a year?

Makes me look a bit thick? I'd say it would be a bit dim to suggest that one party is worse for borrowing more than the other when they are both pretty lax when it comes to asking for more.

It does, I'm afraid because it shows a complete lack of understanding regarding debt and deficit which I constantly read in the guardian.

He would have had to cut at astronomical proportions to not borrow more than labour did prior to the crash as Brown left a deficit close to 12% of GDP.

You criticise him for being reckless, then you criticise him for borrowing more. The left are completely incoherent and that's why you continue to lose elections, people are not stupid even though you think they are.

To be fair, that's exactly what he would have tried to do had they won a majority in 2010.

He said he'd cut it in 5 years

Gideon in 2010

"Thanks to my action today, the structural current balance will be minus 4.8 per cent of GDP this year. That deficit will then be eliminated to plus 0.3 per cent in 2014-15 and plus 0.8 per cent in 2015-16. In other words, it will be in surplus. Public sector net debt as a share of GDP will be 62 per cent this year, before peaking at 70 per cent in 2013-14. Because of our action today, it then begins to fall, to 69 per cent in 2014-15 and then 67 per cent in 2015-16."

Public debt's going to be at least 80% of GDP this year so he's only about £220bn out.

That's £220,000,000,000. What a clown.

No he wouldn't have, as you well know elections are about setting battle lines. When in Gov, politicians become more pragmatic.

Just as labour would have cut deeper, tories would borrow more. The point is that if the left ever want to get back into power they need to be coherent.

Ironically Mcdonnell was actually coherent at one point saying that labour had to move to a balanced budget but needed to tax a lot more. Old labour imo are wrong but at least it's coherent, tax and spend. Not borrow and spend.

I don't think I have criticised little Gideon at all in this thread, and to be fair Labour lost the last election mainly because Ed Miliband was a total goober for five years. No-one, not even me, thought he would make a good prime minister and at the end of the day that can be enough to sink a parties election prospects.

I was just amused at your deduction of labours borrowing being bad and the Tories borrowing being good because reasons.
