Rangel is a Ranger on 12:28 - Aug 15 by simmo | Hmmm. I'm fairly happy with this, although it does depend on why he's here. If it's cover for Kakay and to bring some experience to a young team, that's cool. I assume he can play LB too if needed and with no clear cover for Bidwell that's also a good thing. But if he's here to replace Kakay, who has played really well up to now, that will be annoying. The days of blocking the path for progression of youth players with 35 year old loanees should be long gone, if it's a signing made on that basis, I'd have preferred not to bother. |
I so completely can't see how signing a player for 5 months is 'blocking the progression of youth players' We are chronically short of experienced defenders having just lost 4 (including Smithies), now we have got one in - end of

Agreed I've watched the interview and I am impressed with the guys attitude towards the club, he's only been with us a few days and it's already WE in every statement as if he's been with the club for years. The coaching staff will assess his fitness and if they think he's up to speed then I'm sure he will start a game, we desperately need more experience in the team, loosing Smithies, the Chief, Perch and Robinson has left a big hole to fill. Makes me laugh the majority on the message board had pretty much the same reaction when we signed Hill and Derry, with comments like Palace reject, nobody wanted Jamie Mackie either. Well it looks highly likely we are going to be in a relegation dogfight this year so we need some experienced defenders who can do all the dirty stuff needed to scrap and fight our way to wins. Look at the way we've been turned over already by Preston and Sheffield, once they had the lead they were street smart and got the three points. We have a very young squad that needs some extra experience to help the players progress, I don't for one minute think we are going to abandon our youth policy but you can't keep picking a young team to give them more experience all the time whilst the points drift away. I'm sure lots of the youth will get plenty of opportunities this season but we still need another experienced centre back because without a strong back four we have no chance. I would be interested to know what Clive thinks of the signing, bearing in mind after a couple of his posts recently summing up where we are at the moment he typed WORRIED.

Rangel is a Ranger on 22:15 - Aug 15 by distortR | is it actually negative to say our own kid is doing well and we'd like him to retain his place in the side? That, as a skint club that is doing well to attract, and bring on , young players, it's really important to show them there is a clear pathway into the first team? |
'Clear pathway to the first team' does NOT mean:- guaranteed to start every game and the club is not entitled to bring in better/more experienced players in your position. That's football - happens all the time.
Rangel is a Ranger on 16:07 - Aug 16 with 1707 views | HantsR | One thought that occurred to me was that he was very much part of the Swansea side that for a while, successfully played possession football out from the back (yes I know, ended with 60% possession but all in their own half!). Current squad appear to have been told to espouse that style of play but seem to have some way to go at the moment.

at the moment he's in the first team by default and merit! re your last line, bringing on youth players and being a good option for young players who want to further their career seems to be our only short and medium term option to any kind of football or fiscal success at the moment

I do agree with your last line, but I still don't think that means there isn't room for experience in the squad surely? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Rangel is a Ranger on 18:25 - Aug 16 with 1611 views | JamesB1979 | Played over 300 times for Swansea, around 120 championship games. Can’t see the issue. Brings experience, championship experience too and played for an unfashionable club so unlikely to be just about the money and signed for only 5 months. He won’t play week in week out because he’s 35 and championship is demanding league. Will give guidance and rest to Kakay whilst Furlong is injured. Not only that, would be a good old head to have in the dressing room.

How I see it. IMO an ideal signing for our particular current circumstances, realistically.
