Barton sparked a ten-man brawl in a friendly match against Doncaster Rovers on 25 July 2004 after "hacking" at an opposition player.

He stubbed out a lit cigar in youth player Jamie Tandy's eye, after he had caught Tandy attempting to set fire to his shirt. Barton subsequently apologised for his actions and was fined six weeks' wages (£60,000).
In May 2005, Barton broke a 35-year-old pedestrian's leg while driving his car through Liverpool city centre at 2 am.
In the summer of 2005, Barton was sent home from a pre-season tournament in Thailand after assaulting a 15-year-old Everton supporter who had provoked Barton by verbally abusing him and kicking his shin.
Barton had to be restrained from attacking the boy further by teammate Richard Dunne.
Barton underwent anger management therapy at the order of City manager Stuart Pearce and paid £120,000 in club fines.
In the autumn of 2005, Barton began a seven-day programme of behavioural management at the Sporting Chance Clinic, a charity set up to help troubled sportsmen and women.
On 20 May 2008, he was sentenced to six months' imprisonment for common assault and affray during an incident in Liverpool City Centre.[ Barton served 74 days of this prison term, being released on 28 July 2008.
On 1 July 2008, he was also given a four-month suspended sentence after admitting assault occasioning actual bodily harm on former teammate Ousmane Dabo during a training-ground dispute on 1 May 2007. This incident effectively ended his Manchester City career.
Barton has been charged with violent conduct three times by The Football Association: for the assault on Dabo, for punching Morten Gamst Pedersen in the stomach and for attacking three players on the final day of the 2011—12 season. [Post edited 30 Nov 2021 15:22]

Yes Barton is a dangerous thug, and hopefully justice will be served and he will end up with a long time in prison. If he hadn't been a footballer, he could well have spent a lot longer in prison than he has. | |

I suppose there is that crazy possibility that he was actually not guilty and that he was assumed guilty by many due to his past. He is an odious little turd and has a reputation but he is a bright guy that is obviously flawed.
If someone tried to set fire to my shirt I would give them a hiding so that guy was hardly innocent, although Barton’s reaction was awful had his shirt caught fire and he suffered serious burns that could be classed as attempted murder.
Horrible guy but football and sport in general has loads and Barton gets more grief than many others (some of whom were innocent of any crime eg club’s chairman getting death threats, Olympic athletes wanting name off stand etc. Over Ched Evans).
Barton is certainly no worse that Marlon King, Hughes, Ranger, McCormick Giggs Terry Fleming etc in football, AJ, Bruno, Billy Jo Saunders (especially) were horrible characters and the later remains so, Rugby league has its fair share of nasty characters, but Barton is the poster boy for the hatred of the press.

Totally agree but someone defended the likes of Peter Sutcliffe, Abu Hanza, Pitchfork, Manchester bomber conspirators etc. Waste of tax payers money but it’s the British legal system that is both brilliant and utterly flawed to blame.
