Weakened beer…. 14:54 - Jun 19 with 14224 viewscolinallcars

Much talk in the papers today about brewers lowering the gravity of their beers to save on excise duty and defray their costs.
Beers mentioned included Fosters, John Smith and Marstons.
No sweat for me as these beers don't find their way down my neck.
Worth observing though - I'm paying £6 plus for a pint of ale.

Fed up with all these foreign beers which are actually brewed under license in this country. Many of them are very good in there country of origin but the stuff made here is weak pish. Bought a 4pack of Holstein Pils the other day and it was absolute dross.

Yes all these lagers brewed under license, I swear they all come out of the same keg and they just slap a different label on.

If you'd ever been to Seville, you'd know it's Spanish. You'd struggle to drink anything else in the city

Yeah, I have enjoyed a lot of Cruz Campo in Seville - haven’t been in a long time, but it was almost up there with the Efes monopoly in Istanbul. I enjoyed it, possibly because it was often poured into a chilled glass. Used to drink it on tap at Camino in King’s Cross about 15 years ago. As with Italian lagers, the breweries have obviously noted that UK punters will pay a premium for Estrella/Peroni, so sure Cruz Campo will do well too, and expect to see it everywhere soon. Madri - where did that come from? Never saw that in Madrid when I’ve visited. Mahou everywhere - has some massive brewery invented it for overseas markets in light of the success of Estrella, or is it an old Madrid brewery that’s just exploded? Bloke on the cans winds me up.

Fulham FC: It's the taking part that counts

I assume Madri came from some marketing person's head...

Madri is a fake Spanish lager made by Coors Molson after they bought a Spanish brewery which they use to provide some credibility to it as it is brewed in Burton, which is why it smells like eggs. Absolutely rotten stuff

Spain's great for food, and wine. Right up there with the best. There's even good cider in the north.

But not beer. The idea that fizzy industrial piss can hold a candle to the proper ales brewed in Britain is a travesty.

Whilst beer in pubs has gone up appreciably, supermarkets seem to be holding pretty firm - my favourite bottle, M&S Suffolk Bitter brewed for them by Adnams is £2.65. Only gone up 15p in about four years. Just bought some Hogsback Tea in Tesco at Whitton priced £7 for four.
No sign of any “skimpflation” as in many products that have kept costs down by using inferior ingredients.

That’s what I’ve been told. A good lager on a hot day is a great thing. Madri and Cruccampo (spelling) are rotten.

On my way home from R,s I stop off for a pint or two in the Railway Inn by the bus stop outside Brighton station. £2.85 for a pint of Harvey's Sussex bitter. Often miss 2 or 3 buses whilst in there, would seem rude not to really.

I remember not so long ago you could make your own crate from Beerwulf and these were about £1:10 a pop.
Then they switched to pre-prepared crates much more expensive with mostly the shit beers from the crate making days. (I know because I tried about 90% of them in my crates)

Happy times, 5 of these make you quite lively.

Beerwulf seem to have dispensed with mass crates apart from the advent one, 24 beers for £90.... lol.

I bet 4 of those at least will be some bland orange/grapefruit beer in a really thin small can.

Is there anywhere make your own crate now? I brewed my own with 'Beer in a box' but they dont sell those any more only ones where you need equipment mine you just added yeast and water and waited.
It was delicious and I didn't get the squits.

Relative to climate innit. Love the beers made here, but if it's 38 degrees the last thing I want to do is chew through a pint of 3.8% Bugger's Ecstasy mild

Had a beer in the pub by Olympia the other day. Tiny Rebel something or the other. A 5.5% IPA with a hint of citrus … Craft Fanta I call them. A nice beer after a long walk in the sun. £7.95 !!! There has to be a limit to what the pubs can charge. Ironically some of the cheapest decent beer’s now are in the the Craft beer pubs and breweries that introduced the pricey beers. They seem to be trying to sell the £5 pints to bring the punters back in whereas the conventional pubs are taking the piss.

I can see the the local brewery from my house, Arkells. They made a nice-ish craft lager a few years back and sold it in the flagship pub across the road at £2.75 a pint. I think it was called Spitfire, could have been 2 of the main ingredients but at that price I thought it was bloody marvellous, and I'm not a big drinker.

I think if you brew it under a microbrewery license then there's no tax or perhaps just a fraction of the normal rate. surprised that didn't catch on more really

A mate I play football with has just moved from Fullers to a new brewery specialising in low ABV beers, all under 2.8%. Haven't tried any of the beers yet, but interested to see if they're any good. Seen them in a couple of pubs around West London, like the Distillers and The Ram in Hammersmith - https://theoriginalsmallbeer.com/

I had one in a pub in Waterloo. I don't remember thinking it was up to much tbh.
