TONIGHTS GAME V MAIDENHEAD UTD on 20:30 - Sep 10 by nordenblue
2.0 Kairo
Edit
3.0 Kairo again, just after HT
[Post edited 10 Sep 20:56]
Finished 3-1. We seemed to take our foot of the gas at 3 up, and they had some decent attacks down the left. However a thoroughly deserved win over the 90 minutes and now second. Dreamland after the state of the club just last season both on and off the pitch

Another good win. Actually think their second half “revival” was a good thing with respect to lessons learnt about changing too much with too many. It’s good we’ve lots of options but it’s about making the right choices and Alfa coming on at RWB straight after they’d scored (though the subs were coming on before the goal) put us under too much pressure down that flank.
Credit to McNulty for recognising that and switching it again by moving Gordon out there after Ferguson’s introduction, though there’s an argument that by the end we had an XI on the field that was a little bit too far removed from a preferred line up. However, a convincing win with multiple players getting game time whilst others have a rest is a positive - two sides to every coin and the run were on makes the smaller issues seem irrelevant. As long as we learn from them.
Some great finishes for our goals and some excellent play again ensured a solid victory. East and Beckwith stood out with Robson in goal deserving a mention for how well he sees danger and deals with it calmly. Two games in, he’s a must signing for me.
We are moving along nicely and you feel there’s still more to come. Can’t ask for more than that.
Mitchell is bang on fire and both goals were those of a man who knows this.
East’s goal was simply awesome.
Cruise control, knock it around, bore the pants of the opposition time.
Erm, far from it. Lose the ball in our defensive 3rd, a wonderful bit of slalom by their lad past 3 or 4 players and it’s 3-1.
We didn’t fall to pieces, Maidenhead were instead great. Full out attack on both wings, switching the ball time and again from RB to LW where they were the most dangerous. But for some last ditch tackles, blocks, bodies on the line it could have been very nervy indeed. Food for thought at the least for future games.
Conceding the first almost seemed like an insult to our defence after only conceding 2 in 7 before tonight and thought we might've conceded another which would've made for an unnecessarily jittery last few minutes, but credit to Maidenhead for not given up after going 3-0 down and they came to play football too
First hour was pretty exemplary and Mitchell's confidence is now sky high. East ran the midfield again and the set piece from which we got the all-important earlyish opener was a classic - credit to all involved in that. As 442 says, think there's a lot more to come from this squad and i hope JM can press home the need for ruthlessness when on top

Great 3 points in the end.
Excellent summing up that. Five substitutions is going to affect the fluidity of the performance but you've also got to give credit to the opposition. They probably travelled up to the game today and at 3-0 down a lot of teams would have thrown in the towel, not Maidenhead though, they had a right good go and caused us problems. A big shout out to their fans also, fantastic support from them all night. Credit to the Dale players though, they are doing us proud.

All the team deserved credit however Gordon was great again. Loads of energy, lots of shouting and communication, like pointing to other players to cover, when chasing an attacker leaving a gap. East also a brilliant asset, lots of vision and a superb pass on him.

Just shows how far we have come already this season that we are slightly disappointed with the way it went in the 2nd half of a 3-1 home win to send us level on points with the leaders! We have so many options now - just maybe not so many in a short space of time next time Jim! 😉 4 league wins in a row! Think the last time that happened was under Hilly in League 1 2016/17. We won 6 in a row early season and 5 in a row in December/Jan including our record run of 10 home wins in a row. We eventually just missed out on a play off spot last game of the season. Hope this season sees at least that play off finish.
Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10
Two class finishes by Kairo and a sublime move for our first goal. Yes, we got twitchy@r$€ after they scored as a result of becoming over-confident at the back, but it wouldn't be Dale if we weren't worrying! Mitchell obviously got MOTM, but Robson and Gordon were also outstanding, to mention just two. Robson reads the game really well and reacts accordingly. Gives us confidence. Gordon is such a grafter and skilful with it. He has taken on the captain's role brilliantly. The TEAM won through, again.
Credit to Maidenhead - they have a team of capable battlers who are worthy of a much higher position in this league. You have to admire their fans for making that journey on a Tuesday night.
On the subject of league position, with us being a very welcome 2nd, a mate of mine was looking at the league table on his phone after the game. "Where are the team that are too big for this league?", I asked. "Hang on, I'm still scrolling down" came the reply.
Dale have won 4 in 4. "We are too big for this league" have won 3 in 19.
UP THE DALE!!

Yes, we have a squad of players to be proud of now. The manager promised things would get better and he's been true to his word.

Was Gordon the captain tonight? He made some great tackles again and was frustrated by their goal when talking to mcnulty at the end of the game. He was definitely showing he cared.

Good use of the squad ..3 changes to start then 4 or 5 during the second half keeps them all match fit.
Maidenhead presented probs in the last 35 mins but the back four blocked well and keeper performed well anticipating the long ball..good communication at the back.
Wouldn't be surprised if Devante starts on Sat and Kairo is benched.
The lad from Ipswich applied himself well.
East?...hes destined for greater things

I would be very very surprised if Kairo was benched on Saturday.
Agree, you don't rest a forward when he's just hit a rich vein of goalscoring form. Nobody should be knackered at this stage anyway, we've only played nine games. Squad rotation is very handy though but it's still important that McNulty starts games with his strongest lineup for that particular fixture. There can be a danger of trying to be too clever sometimes with squad rotation and it can bite you on the backside, we saw that at York with Beckwith being dropped to the bench and it cost us.

He wasn't injured because he came on the pitch from the bench, he couldn't have been tired, two games into the season. McNulty has a decent sized squad now and has a bit of a balancing act, giving players game time but also ensuring he is giving us and the squad the best chance of winning the game. Winning games always comes first and he's doing great at the moment.

We played well and showed the potential the squad as this season, but I thought we sat back at 3 up and allowed Maidenhead to not only score, but threaten to score more. I think we must give credit to Maidenhead, they looked better then any side that have visited Spotland this season.
However we showed the character to hold on and get the three points, which may not have occurred last season, the squad this season as so far created a buzz among the fans, that as been missing for some time.

Really good first half but doesn’t it make a difference when pressure and possession is converted into goals? That was a great corner from Henry to find East unmarked for the first goal and he whipped over a great free kick not long after. His deliveries are first class. Just as crucial was the save from Robson just before the break when he turned the ball onto the post. It became a tactical battle in the second half and Maidenhead really caused some problems down their left hand side. Plenty of options on the bench to make changes these days though. The air of obvious disappointment when they scored was evident off the pitch and on the terraces. Clean sheets have become a matter of pride! I thought the attendance was encouraging as well. A Tuesday night with England live on TV didn’t see a drop in gate compared to recent Saturdays which hasn’t always been the case. And it was great to see so many youngsters in the Sandy (by that I mean under 20s). It reminded me so much of my generation 50 odd years ago. Hopefully they’ll be hooked for life just as we were!

I would rather we kept well under the radar and play all our games when England are also playing to go unnoticed . The last thing we need now is money-bags Clubs sniffing round what is a super squad and disturbing the harmony that McNulty has to hand.
