I imagine this was the initial intention, but there's been such an uptake on tickets that they've had no choice. Is it still free to air on DAZN? EDIT: it's still free to watch on nationalleaguetv.com [Post edited 3 Dec 14:25]

Dale vs Manchester United U21s on 14:25 - Dec 3 with 3901 views | Drigdale | I have to admit I was very dismissive of this competition when the details were originally announced. However credit has to be given to the club for how it has promoted this game and the interest generated. I personally won't be travelling across from Yorkshire for the match but I do hope that it is a great night and that people attending for the first time might be tempted to return in the future.

I suppose I agree about tempting folk to return but is it really our aim to sell Man U as our football dream for the prawn sandwich fan rather than the gourmet dish that is supporting your own home team? ps - no I'm not attending any of these Premier league 'pieces of silver'.

The fact we've not had a home game since Nov 9th might have pushed up the attendance tonight too.

It was just over 3600 so about half the given away tickets were used. I found it really strange. The game had less intensity than a pre season friendly and you know Jim wasn't arsed when he took Henderson off at half time. At least the likes of Edwards and some of the fringe players had some game time.

Typical Jim though. Large crowd of fans that would not normally be there in a pointless game and he plays tvvat all and ends up with a 0 - 0 that will send everyone home thrilled and dying to return. If I was the chairman I would be spitting feathers at his continuous negative pi** about approach, especially in a pointless game like this. We should have gone out and played aggressively and with an attacking (plan b) approach which could be used in future games if needed, but nope, let’s play the same as ever. Bore the sh1t out of everyone and make tonight a waste of time. Joke!!!! Just seen we lost not that it matters. Waste of time! [Post edited 3 Dec 21:51]

Can't say I agree with that. We weren't great but it was far from boring, it was a pretty even game (after the first half anyway...) with both sides trying get forward. We lacked a cutting edge or any attempt at finishing but it was entertaining

Whilst there is valid criticism of the way we’ve played at home this season, chucking 11 players out on a pitch who won’t have ever played together before and expecting much more probably wasn’t realistic. When most fans have openly admitted they don’t care about the competition, hard to have a go at the manager for not getting them to produce something spectacular. His tactics aren’t negative. They’re just not as effective as they could and should be. They were fine at Gateshead last week.

We dont have different tactics or a different ethos. Jim wants us to play that way so he isn't going to change because we are playing Man Utd U21's - infact because they played the same way we did it was probably easier tonight. It was a very even game and could have gone either way - we had the best two chances with Dennis in the first half and Alfa fluffing his 1 on 1 with the keeper before Utd scored the winner. Not really bothered about the result although you never want to lose - at least fringe players got a decent run out.

Nice to hear a balanced view from somebody that was there. Also nice to see our best attendance of the season to date - recognising that many will have been there to see upcoming Man Utd players. But we have to find a way to attract the next generation and free tickets was a great initiative. Well done to the club.

Due to the size of crowd that actually went compared to how many would have attended normally without the tickets it can only be described as a good marketing exercise, any more in attendance are future possible customers so well done the club on that idea.

Hi NB did you go to the game did you get the impression that new/lapsed attendees would come again as paying customers? I see Man Utd are going to be putting their prices up to £66 with no concessions, compared to that our ticket pricing looks very reasonable (yes I know it's not the glamour of The Premier League, but that is part of the appeal.

I was there, James, but in my opinion, it's impossible to answer your question one way or the other, short of having actually asked folk during the game. The proof will come over time. On the plus side, I received an email today with a link to a survey asking for various opinions on the experience last night. Presumably everyone else received the same email, which should inform opinions moving forward.
