Been following him closely this season...and he is having a good one. I was one who thought we had bought a dud...but he has made me think again. I love a player who can take criticism on the chin, and knuckle down and improve. He really seems to get us as a club now...and long may it continue. Possible captain? Well done fella.

Hmm, don't like that personally. He was terrible last season, barely looked like he was trying. If that is how he performs when he doesn't like the manager, that isn't a good sign for us or for future sales.

Or maybe I'm looking too much into it. Still out POTS so far for me anyway.

I like it .

By his own admission he was mostly poor last season so it can’t all be Marti’s fault.
The moment MC (and I ) gave up on him was Hull away . Thought he was shambolic for that cameo .
But Marti did bring him back in , to a fair bit of success at the end .

However , clearly we don’t and will never know everything that goes on in a dressing room . Maybe Madsen was being asked to do things that didn’t work . Who knows?

What I like about it is he is showing some , spunk, guts , bollox..whatever you want to call it . Certainly confidence and self belief and that epitomises his performances this season .

His turnaround has been tremendous and he deserves great credit , along with the head coach and staff .

Yesterday was the first time I've heard the "used to be shite, now he's alright" winter wonderland song. Genius :)

I thought last season he had the footballing ability, the occasional pass, finding little pockets etc but far too infrequent and no physical presence to go with it. This season those same attributes are there way more consistently and he’s getting stuck in, winning headers and picking up the bits and pieces. I don’t know if that’s down to him as an individual or coaching but the improvement is obvious.

Really excellent yesterday. Showing for and wanting the ball constantly, which was one of my big bugbears with him last season.

He's clearly a very cerebral person. His interviews show that. Perhaps it's the reason he took some time to adjust his game to the league, the team, and the coaching. Some players are pretty much 'plug 'n' play' when they join a new club. He clearly isn't.

Patience is a virtue, as the saying goes. His team-mates and us fans are now seeing the truth of that.

Going from playing midfield in the Belgian league to the Championship must be like having the top layer of skin peeled off and being sprayed with lemon juice. Takes a while to get over the shock.

From liability to possibly the most important player in the team - in that there's no direct positional replacement that's close to him.

Clear winner of the Paul Furlong redemption award and I hope he continues to push on.

Just listened to his interview on the W12 podcast. Very interesting, and he comes across as a very intelligent young man.
Tellingly, he never once mentioned Cifuentes when discussing last seasons problems, rather him talking it through with Nourry and some bloke who is head of Commercial at the club?!
The biggest issue he had was the work rate off the ball required in England. Something he is working on.
Or in his words, 'I can make a difference there actually even though someone before thought it was a big weakness' I wonder who he was referring to?!

I'm really pleased for him. Just hope he doesn't get injured.

Poll: How is Nourry cooking so far ? 🤣

This. I've a friend in Antwerp who watches KVC Westerlo regularly who said much the same thing when we signed him and kept telling me to be patient when I started moaning about him last year. Pleased to to be served a huge slice of humble pie.

That 'Head of Commercial' is actually Franny who runs the club shop.

There was a long interview with Madsen at the preseason camp when he talked about what a help he was.

When we signed him, my Dutch friend and several Danish friends said what a player we had. I posted this on here at the time. Last season it was a real challenge to not react to the abuse he was getting on here. Deservedly or not.
As an expat R in DK, its so great to see him coming into fruition. But I am worried we are over using him. The guy will need a rest at some point.

Technology advances, unfortunately humans do not.

The boys that do the W12 PODCAST interviewed him.

Was about a 45 minute interview. Some good questions asked and very honest replies from Nicolas...

The one stat which was revealed is that in his pro career has taken 19 penalties and scored all 19. Hopefully then we start picking up a few now then. Was asked if he didnt take them who would. His answer was good. i take the penalties he said. Probably would have been more unsure in his reply last term than thst.

Playing more on his instincts and more adapted to the constant press of championship football and says the group are all in together. Get the feeling he has more freedom with Stephan than with Cifuentes.

Enjoyed that. His description of the teams struggles with energy at Norwich, Derby and the small improvement at Middlesbrough were very interesting.

Basically said it's so difficult to lift your efforts at the end of the week, especially when you go behind.

The W12 interview is definitely worth a listen. He's an unusual character. Comes across as unusually honest and unguarded, and also sensitive to criticism. I wonder if something went on here that is behind is apparent antipathy towards cifuentes?. Also comes across as a bit dour 😂 I like him, and like others you'd have to be incredibly misanthropic to not find joy in his redemption arc

Thing about this, and the comment from Mr Sheen you're replying to, and the rather pointed remarks quoted by WilkinsWaterCarrier upthread about "someone before", is that it's it's one of those "two things can be true" things.

He was poor last season, but with occasional flashes off real ability both in his first couple of games and then towards end of season.

It's only fair to say it would take time to reach the fitness and sharpness to match the pace of this league. Also only fair to acknowledge the guy has really knuckled down to it, doing so while taking a load of abuse. Lot of character, right there.

But even though I will always want to give players a chance (and I definitely included Madsen and Celar in that last year) I can also understand why some people, and maybe a certain former manager, had their doubts as to whether he was ever going to.

Celar looks to be binned off, and with 7 appearances and no goals this season for Dusseldorf, rightly so. Which shows these things can go either way and you'd need to know the guys pretty well before you can call it (which gets back to why I'm reluctant to write players off.)
