| Solihull Wednesday 17:48 - Jan 18 with 12298 views | Delboy | This will be a serious test for us to overcome on Wednesday. Solihull are much improved from the team we thrashed earlier in the season. It's not a situation where we can hope to score the odd goal and ride it out as we are inclined to do. Outside of the top seven they are the team to be most wary of. Their ability to score goals marks them out as a very dangerous outfit. They are capable of punishing you as several teams have found to their cost. I hope we are at our best, take our chances and don't settle back if we score. Hanging on to a one goal lead will not work with these as Carlisle discovered yesterday. Buckle up, I think it could be a tricky one, the first of many over the next few weeks. | | | | |

| Solihull Wednesday on 08:19 - Jan 23 by D_Alien | The very point i made, and needs to happen more. First-time crosses before the defence is settled can't be anything other than the best opportunity to score (a Dale player being in the box, obviously) |
I think to be fair it’s not all pass pass pass, how many assists have Whatmuff and Broome had between them. Also lots of goals come from mani d (a) holding it and laying it off, something we have missed. Then there’s the ball into the corner for TAR to run onto and cut it back into the box. I think there is more of a mix than people realise. It’s just we move the ball around to create the opening which in tight games is something that can be frustrating. For my the one thing that is still missing is the shot from distance when it opens up, East aside there seems to be a reluctance, and to be fair to McNulty this has something he’s highlighted. On final point, if you keep the ball then you don’t concede. 16 goals (including 4 in a mad 25 mins at York ) in 24 games proves this. As said earlier in the thread Solihull had been free scoring before Wednesday night and they were restricted to a header and a couple of half arsed shots. Strikers win games, defences win championships! [Post edited 23 Jan 9:04]

Good post. We do mix our play up more now. To be fair, if you watched the game against Solihull as a neutral you would have fallen asleep before half time. It was a terrible game of football to watch, one of the worst i've ever seen when it comes to a lack of enteetainment. Let's hope that doesn't become a blueprint for future away performances, we're a lot better than that and the paying public deserve better. [Post edited 23 Jan 9:30]

McNulty may have mentioned shooting but I think its just for show. He's a modern coach and its all about XG. Shooting from distance isn't encouraged anymore. The likes of Simmo,Stuart,Lambert,Grant scoring 25 yard screamers from outside the box is a thing of the past. I think shooting and finishing needs to be prioritised a bit more or we wouldn't be missing so many chances infront of goal - certainly McBride is a huge culprit of this - he should be doing extra finishing drills if he isn't already - if he could hit the target he'd be in double figures already this season.

We've missed Beckwith's contributions in the final third, including his ability in scoring from distance Making the point about first-time crosses and taking more punts doesn't require us to significantly change our style... to be fair... it just allows us to be even more effective, by doing it at the right time whilst recycling the ball when necessary. Not sure why anyone would disagree with that [Post edited 23 Jan 10:04]

It wasn’t specifically about your post d_alien, I agree somewhat with putting more first time crosses. I think alrakhia is someone who tries. But sometimes getting the ball into the box quickly is an option that would be taken It was more on the general points made on the thread that we don’t mix up our attacking style. I think we do have different threats, it’s just we put an emphasis on keeping the ball. When we have a full team we have the ability to play long to front man to hold it up, get down the line and cut it back into the box, play the through ball to the forwards to run on to. The thing that we do lack is genuine pace. [Post edited 23 Jan 11:47]

Thank you for this post. Thought it was just me. Of course I take pleasure from our results and league position this season. However I derive very little pleasure from actually watching the games. It feels churlish to say it and to be fair the style of football is endemic in the professional game but the passing for passing sake bores me to tears. I know there are probably cerebral arguments to justify the walking football, pass pass pass aproach but for me its just a giant vacumn cleaner sucking all the passion, excitement and spontaneity out of the game. Sadly there is a whole generation now that woud not comprehend an end to end game, the roar of a crowd as a midfielder picks the ball up in the centre circle with only a couple of yards of space in front of him, but driving it forward. Or what back in the day, was euphemistically called a "marauding winger" or even heaven forbid a marauding fullback in the Wiseman mould. Yes its bringing results and I,m dearly hoping for what would be a very quick return to the league, but no neutral will catch the bug watching it. Up the Dale.

Ironically McBride is one of the players that can hit a screamer, one in a home win earlier this season and the away win last year against Yeovil when he really ripped on to get a late winner. Where has that confidence gone?

Quite agree Even the footy at the highest level is a pretty dire watch generally. More side to side than end to end. Results are king and how you get them is secondary to entertainment for the spectator. Even the refs are boring..oh for a Roger Kirkpatrick …Jack Taylor..from the 1970s The pundits..don’t get me started…Neville…Sutton..Savage..awful individuals offering nothing but sound bites and wind ups. The commentators..dull dull dull…Hugh Johns..Brian Moore..Peter Jones must be spinning in their graves. The game has become completely sanitised on and off the pitch with the likes of VAR

Don’t think there’s anyone on here who would argue they enjoyed football more in the past. It’s a totally different game now. Fans have changed too, there’s a different market now who look at the game on an ‘xG’ level as that’s what they’ve been brought up knowing. The articles on the game, the insights tactically contain so much detail and analysis has moved towards something that’s alien to the ‘traditional fan’. It’s interesting how the game works in cycles though. Much has been made this season about things like the importance of set pieces and the return of long throws. To the point that now it’s being seen as making the game about percentages and spoiling the chances of winning in open play. The irony of Arsenal becoming the modern day equivalent of the George Graham ‘1-0 to the Arsenal’ is quite amusing. On Dale, it’s been a good time to be a fan over the last couple of years, if only to see the ongoing improvement and how we’ve evolved as a side. There’s been a lot of tough watches, some times when it’s been hard to see whether we’d become a real success, but that’s never been any different as a fan of this club. It’s been about sticking with them and hoping our day will come. That loyalty has been rewarded as it was in the past. Whilst not disagreeing in missing aspects of the game, the bit about a marauding fullback is one which we can actually top now with respect to how attacking our defenders are. Where we had Wiseman on the right, we now have a right wingback who plays so high up the pitch that they’re often in the same position a winger would be. Whilst on the right of the back three Kyron Gordon not only gets forward, he’s a vital part of how we attack and assists many goals. We have less ‘proper defenders’ than in all my time watching the club. Yet have conceded less goals than ever in that time too! I don’t necessarily like the way football has changed, but as it stands we are one of the more attacking sides that you’ll see in how we set up.
