Given that Goalkeepers seem to keep records on the preferences of penalty takers in terms of which side and at what height they put their penalties, it strikes me that the system needs to be randomised from the perspective of the taker...
So, there are 5 target zones bottom left, top left, centre top, top right and bottom right, call them 1-5 . If, pre-game , the penalty taker chooses a ball maked 1-5 out of the bag, and aims to hit that spot, the keepers attempt to know the takers preferred target is somewhat nullified. Also, the taker is relieved of the requirement to pick his own spot. He simply has to concentrate on hitting the pre-chosen spot....

"As well as not rushing, players are advised to pick a spot and commit to it. Changing your mind leads to uncertainty, stress and poor technique. Some players leave it to the last minute and wait for the keeper to dive before hitting it to the other side. However, this is a high risk strategy and is associated with a greater number of missed penalties.
Penalties that are on target and high in the goal are rarely saved. This is because it is very hard for goalkeepers to reach these areas." Excerpt from Sports Psychology

How far back does it go? Remember that Jones started playing for us in 1998 and scored his first penalty in 1999, and as you say, independent websites aren't always accurate.

I've just checked the site - they also have Henderson on 492 appearances for Dale when he's now on 501 and your figures include his penalties for Salford!

Jones definitely scored 29 penalties and missed at least seven. I say "at least" in case I've forgotten any from his early days.

His misses were:

Nov 2000 v Mansfield (a)
Apr 2001 v Macclesfield (a)
May 2004 v Southend (h)
December 2004 v Bristol R (h)
Jan 2011 v Oldham (a) - O'Grady scored from the rebound, which might explain one of the gaps
Nov 2011 v Preston (a)
Mar 2012 v Sheff Wed (h)

Henderson has definitely scored 26 penalties for Dale and missed 10.

His misses are:

Dec 2014 v Fleetwood (h)
Jan 2015 v Bradford (a) - Vincenti slammed in the rebound
Sep 2015 v Fleetwood (a)
Apr 2016 v Swindon (h)
Oct 2016 v Swindon (a)
Sep 2017 v Gillingham (h)
Oct 2017 v Northampton (h)
Dec 2017 v Bradford (a)
Sep 2022 v Liverpool U21 (h)
Jan 2026 v Truro (h)

Transfrmrkt have also missed one of his converted penalties for Dale - at home to Gillingham in January 2020.

I mentioned on my post that i wasn't sure how accurate the website was. They aren't my figures, they are the websites. The Salford stats are relevant in respect of Hendos prowess when it comes to his penalty conversion rate. I think it's generally accepted that he isn't great on penalties, credit to him for stepping up though. It's a pity there are no stats for chips and lobs, he'd be top of the pile.

I didn't literally mean "your" figures; I meant the figures you had quoted.

The question is though, next time Dale are awarded a penalty (and Mani D isn’t on the pitch) who takes it?

Barlow and Rodney have taken them in the past.

Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10
