Sounds like he took you via School Lane from the Town Hall square.
The problem with the return journey is that the station is in the middle of a huge redevelopment area, and from certain approaches is very difficult to access, due to road closures and one-way restrictions. Just be glad you don't have to negotiate it every day like some of us !!
We are having the 'Metrolink' tram system being built, so whilst £9 would normally be extortionate, in view of the circumstances, it might have been unavoidable.
