I think you'll find alcohol dehydrates you on the ground also.

I've flown with them over a dozen times and I can confirm alcohol is freely available and that I've sampled most of it! 
Really good airline. Great inflight entertainment system - dozens of films on demand. You won't get bored. |  | | |

If you want to go out, early evening isn't a bad time. The Souq Waqif is a 10 minute cab ride from the airport. Quite interesting, sell pretty much everything and lots of restaurants. Starts to get busy from about 9pm. Taxis are cheap too. Not likely to cost more than a fiver each way.
Other than that, there really is nothing in Doha. A couple of shopping malls and that's about it. Can give you their names if you want them.

Haha. I've never been in transit through Doha, so don't know what the rules are, but when you go through immigration they just charge you for a 4 week tourist visa. I didn't ever get asked why I was there or how long I was there for. | | | |
