Travel advise Prague 10:00 - Mar 20 with 715 viewsrunningman75

With all the current gloom over the season and poor weather here decided to book an end of season trip to Prague. Was hoping better weather in May , and hopefully get more for my pound as not in the Eurozone ( though pound is weak against everyone now). Anyone been there and any recommendations of places to see , do, good food, beer etc.

Ok as my Mrs is Czech, I should be in a good position to answer! Although i should point out, I have only been to Prague once, given that the in-laws live.

Prague is quite small - so you can do the main sites in a couple of days: the presedential palce, the Horological Clock and the St Charles Bridge are the main ones. the jewish cemetray coming next. Wenselas Square is a disapointment as its bacially Nike Town and and Apple store.

Advice would be to book most things in advance (hotels, taxis etc.( as they are still prone to ripping folk off if you dont (that advice comes from my wife!)

There are loads of Czech pilsners to try - my favourite is Gambrinus, but try some of those you dont get here like Krusovice, Radogast or even a cerny beer (black beer - yes our radek is Mr Black) which is half lager half bitter. If you are in Czech for longer you could go to Pilsen to tour the Pilsner factories or Karlovy Vary which is a spa town where they filmed a lot of Casino Royale (Daniel Craig version) and there is a spirit factory (Bechavoka) tour. Both are about 2-3 hours by bus from Prague.

hope that helps

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

For food i would avoid the main square as the food is good but a bit pricey.
If you can try and find somewhere a bit off the beaten track (preferably where the locals go)... food portions are big and very good value, and as with the main square the quality is excellent.

Try as many different beers as you can... and dont be afriad of the bars home brews! They dont use chemicals in there beers because it never lasts very long (so the taste is exceptionally clean and you wont get a sore head).

If you are taking your mrs you must see the Tin Church (main square) at night as it is beautiful. Also the Charles bridge and surrounding area are lovely too.

Hi,

I've used this site for ages but never posted. I saw your message - I lived in Prague for 6 years and also married a local so thought I would help you out.

If you haven’t been to Prague before then one of the best ways of seeing as many of the tourist sights as possible is to take the number 22 tram from Národní třída in the direction of PohoÅ™elec; it'll cost you a quid and follows a scenic route passing by the National Theater and through Malá Strana (Lesser Town) up to Prague Castle with some stunning views along the way. Get off at Prague Castle (pražský hrad tram stop) and after a wander around the castle area you should walk down through the cobbled streets of Malá Strana and across Charles Bridge (Karlův most) and then continue into Old Town Square (StaromÄ›stské námÄ›stí) to get a flavour of all of the oldest part of the city in 3 hours. There are loads of little bars on the way down if you want to make it into a bit of a pub crawl.

For taxis, try only to use AAA taxis (they are bright yellow) and they won't rip you off. otherwise you can get everywhere on public transport easily - Prague is a small city.

If you want a non-tourist night out head to the area across the river called Andel (or sometime called Smichov) and there are loads of good restaurants and bars hidden around there where it's still less than a pound a pint. Best beer by a mile is Gambrinus (in my opinion) - almost hangover free no matter how much you drink.

If you want to go out late, head for the street Dlouha in the centre and you'll find loads of bars and restaurants around that area. Avoid Wenceslas Square at night as you'll just get hassle.

Hope that helps.

I too have been to Prague once and have visited the airport arrivals and departures lounges, the inside of 3 taxi cabs, a hotel bedroom and the Wincor Nixdorf offices in some grotty suburb. Nothing worse than travelling to a foreign capital city on business for 24hrs.

It's a brilliant city - I would recomend a walking tour. They are well guided -interesting local insights, and you can spot good places to go back to later. cathedral is free but hard to understand without a walky talky guide thing which can be a bit pricey.
