Whatever happened to on 13:46 - Mar 21 by Monahoop | Who can remember fat left in the frying pan to be reused? None of this washing up after use nonsense. Mind you after discovering mouse poo and footprints in the pan one day, my mum changed her tactics from then on. My old man hated Fords and did to his dying day. Never knew why though. He had a Wolsley 15/50. Leather seats, wooden dash, pop up arm indicators, hand crank starter if the electric starter or battery failed and a speedometer that screeched like a WW2 German air raid siren when doing over 50 mph. And remember no power steering or air con. Wimps nowadays drivers are, complete wimps! |
My first ever car in the early 70's was the Wolsey, paid £20 for it, big hole in the floor by the control pedals and plenty of rust holding the rest together, no chance of a M.O,T.......... Eventually got knicked going over Battersea Bridge one Sunday morning on way to the coast, got a ban for 12 months, not bad considering I hadn't even passed my test ! Carried on for years buying wrecks for a few pounds and patching them up to run for a few months, wouldn't dream of such a thing now, so my 'whatever happened to' is the balls to drive round in motors fit only for the scrapheap.

My first was a Mini that cost me 60 quid, almost as soon as I got it the gearbox went so I only had 3rd and reverse. I couldn't afford to stop, once I got going so it was always an exciting drive, to say the least. Eventually I changed the engine and gearbox for one out of an MG 1100 and that had plenty of power, a short gear stick but the differential was wrong. Happy Days

Can I say how lucky we were? The OP was on about bread and dripping, and that was one of my dad's favourite treats. The other was bread and butter with sugar sprinkled on it. I could understand the first, but not the second (though straight good bread and butter is still marvellous). Basically, he was a kid who was deprived because of WWII. He would have died fat, except for the cancer, and my mum is still fat. We live in good times.

Presumably you're talking about the winter of '63? Two stories up and our steel window fittings had ice an inch thick in a centrally-heated flat. Mind you, we were doing ski jumps on the fat trays off our gas stoves in the playground.
