Flipping midfield triangle? 10:32 - Nov 24 with 2168 viewsmikecph

So most games we play with 2 defensive midfielders and 1 AM. But it seems we have quite a few midfielders who are good in AM role (Poz, Shelvey, JDG, Michu). Especially JDG and Shelvey have been used quite a bit as DM but in my mind seem more natural in either as midfielders or even AM. So why not flip the midfield triangle and play with 1 DM and 2 AM (/M)? Or do you guys think that will leave us too thin defensively with our backs going forward so much? :)

We rarely play with 2 defensive midfielders. The only two we have is Britton and Canas.

The rest are creative midfielders (Guzman, Shelvey) or attacking midfielders (Pozuelo, Michu).

But I am not sure if I understand you correctly.

Jokeren is correct. We don't really play a proper triangle in midfield, we generally play with three different types of player in three different roles. Canas or Britton play the defensive role, Shelvey or de Guzman play the creative role and Michu or Pozuelo play the attacking role. Flipping the triangle as you say should happen naturally in this formation as the creative midfielder will push forward when we attack but should drop back when we defend.

De Guzman is a very underrated player, especially by quite a few of our own fans.
