I think it runs a little deeper than simply any folk who travel across the water. The heritage and identity of the club is Irish Catholic and a large number connected to the club maintain this.
The majority fans identify with Ireland, the club make half arsed attempts to leave Scotland for Dublin on a regular basis. This year alone, 'Sellick' made motions to play their European games in Dublin next season during the Commonwealth Games.
They believe they're Irish and want to be Irish. They don't want Scotland and vice versa. [Post edited 3 Dec 2013 13:55]

Eire is the Irish language word for Ireland, so I don't think it's really true to say it is outdated. It's used on Irish stamps as well, for example:

What percentage of Celtic fans make up that "majority" that identify with Ireland? And I'm sure Scottish football clubs appreciate Celtic's presence even if they don't like them, especially after the farce that is Rangers decided to implode. |  |

Eire has been a free state since the proclamation on Easter Monday 1916 with the Declaration Of Independence coming on 21st January 1919.
