The Southend chairman is self interested property developer. He has never had an easy relationship with the fans. They have always been good payers with the like of Cox on 7k a week. But I couldnt see the model being sustainable, and this news would suggest it’s not. The ground at Roots Hall which is still in use, on a rented basis, was sold to Sainsbury’s several years ago. With the changes in retailing they don’t actually want it now. But the club have had planning permission for over 18 months for a new development, ironically close to the crematorium. No work of any type has been commenced since then, and I wonder if this latest episode is intended to get some further third party funding coming in to save the day on all fronts. In any event it marks a further chapter in the stained relationship between the board, the club and the fans. You think the Rochdale board has issues relating to its fan base, i tell you it’s like a mutual appreciation society compared to this lot. Feel for all those at the club who are unpaid at what for many is the tightest time of the year.

And the EFL let that happen. Again. Just shows that they have very little oversight of the finances of their clubs. And with some Championship clubs with debts over £50m it just feels like a house of cards.
I noticed that Chelsea made a loss of £90m despite their owner pumping over £200m in. Their wage bill went up by £40m in one season. How can that be right and is it any wonder the rest of the football pyramid is trying to compete financially in their own way
