Really good interview with Watson on YouTube. There’s been a lot of comment about not really seeing what we are, what the identity of the team is, and this has been justified as we’ve looked miles away at times. However, there’s an explanation about how many sessions and meetings it can take to get to a point where that’s in place.
It’s something I’ve been guilty of, having remarked to a fellow fan before the game on Saturday that it’s hard to say exactly what we are, but with that context and results improving it’s acknowledging that maybe it’ll take a while longer yet. There was enough at Fleetwood to see how effective we can be when we do play out and go wide, which is obviously a preference.
There are similarities to the commitment to process we’ve seen in recent years, and whilst there isn’t always a universal buy in to whatever the process is, if it works then it’s a positive.
Don’t always have to like something, as long as it can be understood.

Talking of interviews, it's a good job we haven't got any injuries at the moment...
Maestro? No.
Elite? No.
Heavyweight poster? No.
Able to be rational and not over-react to individual results? Yes.

Agreed. And credit for another excellent interview by the Radio Manchester team. He sounds like a completely different leader now he's becoming settled in the area and clearly authentically enjoying his time here. Wouldn't be surprised mind if we lose a couple of upcoming games as I think we're still very much work in progress, but the overall direction feels upwards and increasingly calmer.

If we look back at McNulty's regime it took him a year to stablise the club and start to build a culture with a limited squad when we were playing catch up due to late recruitment. By the second season we had a style of play and a better squad. The promotion season added to that.
Watson is in effect in a similar situation as McNulty was when he took over, apart from the financial issues. He is putting his stamp on how we play, which is focused on pacey wide players. He inherited a number of 'Jim's players' who maybe do not fit this new style of play and was late in the recruitment cycle. To top it off we have been decimated with injuries, especially in defense and central midfield. Two key areas.
I think we are starting to see green shoots. Middleton and Smith both possess quality and pace and Brown has added goals to his work rate. Flint has added some steel, experience and assurance at the back. If we can get through to January in a decent position we should be okay. I suspect there will be some shape shifting in the transfer window to strengthen the squad.
The summer will bring year two. Lots of players out of contract gives Watson room in the budget to recruit players who fit the profile he wants. Only Maguire, Smith, Francis, Hayes and Jenkins are under contract for next season. He will have plenty of time to identify targets.

This is all perfectly true, and it would appear there's the green shoots of comprehension by the fanbase at large at the task Watson inherited
Asking him to "continue with Jim's style to begin with" would be like trying to impersonate your new girlfriend's ex whilst she got over him
I did chuckle at the clubs apparent contempt for a certain Swindon player in the match preview
"Dale have two former Swindon players in their ranks, starting with Ryan East. The midfielder signed a one-year deal following his departure from Reading, enjoying a season in which the club made the play-offs where they were defeated by Port Vale in the semis.
Dating further back to 2011 is when Aden Flint joined The Robins. He made his Swindon debut against Rochdale in a 1-1 draw and went on to have a successful first season as the club won the league title in 2012.
We’ll be seeing a familiar face in James Ball this weekend, who joined the side in red last summer. "

Don't agree, as you'd expect DA - McNulty took over a disaster so had to change for success; Watson took over the most successful Dale team ever...
if it ain't broke....
I'm glad you disagree... but you're missing the point
McNulty's system was based upon his own unique personality, which ultimately proved successful
Watson... anyone else... just wouldn't be able to "continue" that. Having a system comes with something far more subtle than mere tactics - it's about people, probably first and foremost
SAF is featured in today's news, with insights into his entire career. He achieved what he did because of his personality. There's also a documentary been shown recently called The Three Kings, about Busby, Stein and Shankly and how they all knew each other and achieved what they did. They also needed to break the mould
Watson is gaining my respect, for being his own man. The Ogdens have stood by him and that just adds to the respect i have for them
Watson's own way of doing things is slowly but surely - against great adversities - starting to come together
I'll go further. The system that got us out of the NL needed breaking, we really just about made it at the end - through the players having bought into Jim McNulty - but he'd gone
Watson had that to deal with first, so trying to continue with that system just would not have worked. The board brought Watson in based upon him having the same kind of footballing - and human - values, but he needed to make it his own
If anything, the way we play out from the back is taking even bigger risks that it did before. The difference is we don’t do it in such a controlled manner, it’s with the aim of getting it wide quickly - best example of this is the first at Fleetwood.
Make no mistake, the passing around at the back remains, it’s now with less options (no extra man in a back three) and with intention of breaking the first line and getting it to our wingers where they can make an impact.
Interestingly, it appears that McNulty is employing a similar tactic at Stockport where they go all out to attack the opposition, albeit with the a different formation, that leaves them vulnerable at times at the back, in a similar way that when we don’t get it right, there could be a chance for the opposition.
It’s the modern game which can be adapted using different players and formations which, when it comes to being a supporter, you have to take the rough with the smooth and turn up every week and provide some backing that will hopefully assist in getting results.
When it doesn’t, the manager will rightfully be questioned. And it appears Watson is fine with this.

I'd go one further still and argue McNulty practically broke it himself. The squad assembled was not a 100+ season team and it's points total has only been bested by financial juggernauts in York and Wrexham.
He got every inch possible out of that team both physically and mentally, and when we look back at that final run in we saw players running on empty. How he got that motivated after the York game I would describe as a small miracle.
It's also interesting to see how he's building at Stockport. Speaking to some of their fans theyve really taken to him and they're playing some of the best free flowing attacking football they've seen in years. This to me suggests a budget/skill issue with our NL side. I'm unsurprised at this.
Given we'd come off the back of such a historic and dominant season it's clear us as fans expected to carry on this season in much the same vein. I hope now the dust has settled and we've started to show our value in L2 Watson can now be afforded real time to embed his own values and ideas. I think in the long term we'll be all the better for it.

Got to feel for Waller there. Watson was very open in his praise for his display last week, so for him now to be back in the bench will lead to unnecessary questions about why Ramming is back in.
Guessing Wilson at LB and Sherring at CH.
Rodney not on the bench, Taylor missing out completely.

Taylor must be injured? Francis to sit and Gilmour and Adeeko to play either side of him? Good to see Beckwith back. I wonder if the bench thing is something to do with having to have X amount of players in the last match day squad in the FA Trophy line up?

Looks like Sherring right back and tasker left back by the warm ups

You could be right because having Hannett, Silcott Duberry and and Hayes on the bench seems a real overload on wide players, while the only defender sitting there has been out for months. TBF I don’t know what options are available to Watson. In any case Holloway has more or less told us that if we don’t win decisively we’ll need shooting. UTD

When we move the ball quick we can look dangerous but brown is a bit isolated. Swindon are set up for a smash and grab in this game and hopefully it doesn’t come off.
Central midfield is still not right for me and this is I am guessing sadly somewhat from injury rather than design. Francis and gilmour are not a good mix against physical or any team with height.
Tasker is really proving to be a prospect and flint is already my player/signing of the season. Hopeful we continue to push as Swindon are an average side and we are making them look better human they are.

They do not look great but we have not created much. Need to find Middleton in space more. Wilson and Tasker have been impressive. It feels like a 1-0 game Hopefully it is us who gets the goal.
