Yes and No.

On the one hand, the defence (which many people thought would be England's Achilles heel) has performed well, conceding only 1 goal in 3 games. Walker and Trippier have been solid, if unspectacular.

On the other hand, there is a lack of balance on the left hand side. Being right-footed, Trippier has offered little going forward. With Foden looking to cut inside from the left, England have little width or attacking threat on that flank.

Moreover, Southgate brought an unfit Shaw to Germany and started the tournament with 3 right-footed full-backs in the team. Trippier at left-back, Walker at right-back, and Trent in midfield. That's more on Southgate than the players but in a way fullbacks (through no fault of their own) have been a problem for England.

Agree. I feel a bit for Foden as not only has he has been played out of position on the left but there has been no genuine left back to support him or provide an overlap. At the start of the tournament I would've like to have seen Bellingham revert to central midfield with Foden in the 10 but Gareth instead decided to experiment with TAA in midfield. Indeed, England started the tournament with 3 right backs in the team; 1 at right back, 1 at left back, and 1 in central midfield. A bonkers experiment which thankfully didn't cost England its place at the tournament. With all that being said, England now have a real opportunity to kick on. One just has to hope that Gareth starts putting round pegs in round holes and has the courage to allow the players to play on the front foot. Given his track record, it feels a vain hope but with this likely to be his final tournament perhaps he'll finally throw the shackles off.

So you did mean TAA at right back (OP Post edited 27 Jun 15:28).

As for Shaw, this is a real conundrum for Gareth. As the only naturally left-footed full-back his introduction would add balance to the team. However, Luke hasn't played competitive football for months so throwing him in now would be a gamble. If Gareth is to take this gamble, the time is now. He can't take this risk in the latter stages of the competition against top opposition. The lad would need circa 60 minutes against Slovakia to build his fitness for sterner tests to come. If Shaw is introduced against Slovakia then that would presumably mean Walker at RB, with TAA coming on later as Luke tires. Either that, or move back to the wingback system that served England so well at the last Euros.

Ned - Walker and TAA both at left back? I assume you mean TAA at RB. I like your selections but I doubt Southgate will be bold enough to go with that. Ancelotti's use of Bellingham in the 10 role at Real Madrid appears to have clouded Gareth's thinking, and, in turn, compromised Foden's role. Bellingham used to feature for England in central midfield but Southgate appears reticent to return him there. With Foden back in the UK, it's likely Bellingham will remain in the 10 role and, instead, we'll see a change on the left. I suspect Mainoo will come in for Gallagher, and one of Palmer or Gordon come in for Foden. However, I'm not convinced that Gareth will drop Saka. I hope I'm wrong because Palmer and Gordon both showed quality, energy and intent in their cameo appearances, characteristics that have been missing from England's group stage performances.

Non QPR help needed
at 16:36 13 Jun 2024

You haven't said whether your employed, self-employed or contracting. For the purposes of my response, I'll assume that you're employed.

I suspect that your employer doesn't want to pay mileage as you'll be receiving a full day's pay for half a day's work. On paper, this seems fair but it's somewhat disingenuous and unprofessional.

If you're intent on driving your own vehicle and claiming mileage then strictly speaking you would need to extend your vehicle insurance policy to cover business use as commuting tends to cover travel to and from your usual place of work.

However, your employer's argument cuts both ways. If you don't have business vehicle insurance then your employer can't expect you to use your private vehicle to travel to another business site. I would go back to them and ask that they hire a car or pay expenses for alternative transport.

That could work but I doubt Asmir would be tempted by such an offer as reports suggest there is interest from PL clubs to be their number 2 (as well as options in Saudi). If that's the case, I can't see him rejecting those offers to be a number 2 at QPR on less money.

Begovic - Best QPR Goalie in Years
at 18:08 1 Jun 2024

The OP had me in fits of hysterics with this line:

"Begs was there coming out quickly for catches and punches, constantly talking to the players around him".

Flapovic was once a great keeper but is now slower than a boat to China and couldn't catch a cold. He's also very quiet and his distribution is poor. There is also a misconception that he's a great shot stopper but, as Clive pointed put in his end-of-season review, Opta rated Begovic as the third worst for shot stopping, costing the R’s something in the region of seven goals. QPR's good defensive record was in spite of Asmir ,not because of him. If you're in any doubt, check out QPR's stats with and without Cook and JCS in the team.

Yes, there are worse keepers out there but you have to put things into context. If Walsh had played last season and committed the same errors, you could mitigate them by his age, lack of experience and lower wages. Begovic is an experienced keeper, on a good wedge, who wore tha captain's armband. He, rightly, should be judged to a higher standard and has fallen well below this. Clive awarded Asmir a D; I think that was spot on.

If Asmir does stay, he'll need to pass the armband to Cook and focus on improving his own performances. Even if he does this, he has a long way to go to be considered the best QPR goalkeeper in years.

Dykes injured?

With all due respect I have no interest in Scotland, my concern is how this impacts the player and the club. On the slightly bright side, if the injury is long term QPR will have to go to market for a replacement as they can't begin next season with just Frey and Armstrong.

No one is debating the positives of taking up cycling. It's the poor riding habits in London that was brought into question by the OP. I encourage anyone to take up cycling but do so responsibly and don't act entitled expecting the world to give way.

I wondered how long it would take radical lefties to pin the blame for poor cycling behaviour on the Tories. Laughable theory. No mention, of course, of the weight of immigration in London coupled with the lack of assimilation resulting in road users (motorists and cyclists alike) not understanding the rules, let alone obeying them.

Keep banging that drum. With any luck the message will seep in that they're entitled to nothing and should learn to take responsibility rather than just expect others to make adjustments.

"Nowhere in the world that I know of regulates cycling in the way some on here are asking for, it simply isn't practical, and all it would do is stop people cycling, which we are trying to increase."

Japan does and they have the second highest number of cyclists.

Nope. That's the penalty for careless driving, not a "close pass".

Marti Contract??
at 18:26 30 May 2024

Personally I'm pleased that others are coveting our manager. It means the club finally got an managerial appointment right and he's doing a good job. My concern is around the club's strategy of not disclosing contract lengths. Not knowing the duration of his contract fuels social media speculation.

Makes sense given he was Kompany's assistant. Provides some continuity whilst Burnley search for a permanent replacement. With any luck he'll do a reasonable job and Burnley won't come sniffing around Marti.

Indeed. Italian roads are bonkers. I once drove to the Italian coast on a single-lane carriageway which motorists turned into a dual carriageway. There was a constant stream of motorists on both sides overtaking with their indicator permanently switched on.
