2019/20 Season Review - The Central Midfield
at 13:12:58

For me Romeu is not a number 1 choice for that position and will never be, he doesn’t have the range of passing and can be reckless in the challenge, giving free kicks away in dangerous positions. A guy who is constantly sliding into tackles probably means that he is out of position more often. Great back up but we need a decent PEH replacement. From what I have seen of Smallbone he looks good, he will get game time in centre mid next year.

Boufal Only Second Option For Celta Vigo
at 21:48:53

In the Premier league, positions 7-20 the margins are pretty small, all the teams try to play low risk, organised football, stay solid, counter attack at pace and threaten at set pieces.
When we have an opportunity to use a player whose ability stands out amongst all the mediocrity then it’s worth persevering with. We drew the most matches in the league, if we had that one moment of magic to change those results into wins then our league position would look very different. At the end of the season we had Sims and Austin coming off the bench, I had little confidence these were game changing. Boufal has that X factor, Ralph needs to take a look

Who Should Stay And Who Should Go !
at 18:59:47

Re JWP - don’t understand why you would feel the need to get rid of him, I don’t know exactly what you would class as a “silly offer” but I struggle to know how we can attract a better quality of player to Saints at this stage of our cycle without overpaying by ridiculous amounts.
In my view he has been a victim of some pretty lofty expectations since he captained England U21s. Perhaps He isn’t going to take it to the next level but he is solid performer who is now regularly contributing goals, tackles and key offensive passes.

It makes me laugh that we say we need a “quality striker” or a “commanding centre back”.... so does everyone else, so why would we be able to get them over bigger 30 clubs in Europe? We are very much in the hit and hope bracket when it comes to transfers, For every Van Dijk, Mane and Tadic read Hoedt, Elyounoussi and Carillo.
So when we have a homegrown talent capable of playing 30 games a season, we should never sell unless they want to go. JWP has to stay.

Saints V Bournemouth The Verdict
at 18:29:25

For me, would love to see Boufal be given another crack, he is the ONLY player in the squad that can offer something genuinely different. The Premier League has very small margins between winning and losing and we have no real differentiator between ourselves and 10 other teams. In a tight game when you need one moment of magic, we don’t have anyone that has that X-factor ability. Thinking on the lines of Anderson at WHam, Zaha at Palace Or Almiron at Newcastle.

To add to the list above, we have to get rid of Long, not of the required standard, even the weekends goal needed a deflection. I would rather Long be moved on and Carillo getting a go, cos I can’t see much interest in buying him, benched now for Leganes now I see. Get rid of Sims as well, not good enough either.

Saturday’s match was pretty much the first Saints game I have seen that has entertained me for a good few years. Commitment, skill, attacking intent, was brilliant to watch, RH is a certifiable genius. Roll on the new season.

Saints Linked With A Fernando Torres Return To The Premier League
at 20:20:12

I think that would be absolutely brilliant, not sure why the negativity on here. End of the season deal, I think it would great to have a genuine star in a Saints shirt, as much for the players as the fans. Can be any worse than last years Caceres debacle.
Torres and Gabbi up front? At least I will be excited turning up to a home match for once this season !!

Saints V Manchester United The Verdict

I can't agree with this criticism of Boufal, he is the one player in the side who can create something out of nothing. His technique in tight areas is incredible.
Sure, he is making some wrong decisions, when to hold on it it, when to pass, but that comes down to experience and game time. I get the impression he is trying too hard to impress at times as well.
Clearly the players see that as well, reference Tadic dropping to the left side to give Boufal the central role when he came on.
Who cares if Boufal gives the ball away at the edge of the opposition penalty area whilst trying something when we are searching for a goal. You want your most skilful player to be getting in those positions causing damage. I think he did ok in the 20 mins or so he was on, beating people and getting a shot off.
Could be sensational next season

From my perspective this was a big improvement on the last 3 home games, especially second half when I thought we were excellent. Tadic dropping deeper to get hold of the ball and try to dictate the play, Stephens showing confidence to bring the ball out (And playing higher up the pitch in general). We engineered good positions to cross the ball into the box, although Targett, Redmond, Cedric and Pied all ultimately failed in the quality of delivery.
Ghe second half performance does show me that Puel can set them up in an attacking fashion, why we revert to the cautious style of play so often is a bit of a mystery. Maybe both Puel and the players are just lacking in confidence, how different it was when we battered both ManC and CrystalP this time last year......
