Watched the first two episodes last night and had to watch some of it again to admire the drone work, the final scene for example where it finishes on the dad laying flowers in the car park was particularly good. And how did they do the bit where the kid jumps out the classroom window? It must have been an open window with some clever editing to make it look like a dirty closed one as the camera goes through a fixed pane window! The one take filming is a nice trick but is it really necessary? I'll reserve judgement until I've seen the rest but it's working so far. Top recommendation.

The Upcoming COP30 climate summit in Brazil
at 10:43 14 Mar 2025

In 30 years time people will look back at The Handmaid's Tale and say "wow, this was ahead of its time". The inability to reproduce won't lead to us disappearing in one generation, there will be egg harvesting and pregnancies will be 'to order' but the massive fall in the population will have catastrophic knock on effects (it will fix the climate problem though so at least there's that).

Our civilised world is far more precarious than most of us realise. A temper tantrum in the White House can cause a domino effect that could set off a series of unfortunate events and not just pensions to plummet. We've come a long way in the last 80 years and those of us approaching retirement couldn't have chosen a better time in history to live but it's clear the good times are coming to an end. Whether it's failing antibiotics, Covid26, bio weapons, a climate catastrophe or a Trump enabled whoops apocalypse, we've brought it upon ourselves...or AI will decide, 'enough of this shit'....and we'll be gone.

Difficult to stay upbeat some days, I guess this is one of those days, for me anyway. It's raining as well.

A word about contention..
at 12:58 4 Mar 2025

I deliberately stayed out of that thread for various reasons but mainly because, as you say, you can't change the minds of people who don't want their minds to be changed (as I proved in the last Trump thread). What I will say though is that I can't fully agree that everything is based on opinions and ego as there are some fundamental truths we should all be able to agree on. For example, as I was reading your post I was thinking about the flat Earth conspiracy theory and how it's not my ego or my opinion that leads me to believe the world is round, it's the mountains of evidence proving that it is and the total lack of evidence proving that it isn't.

It's more complicated with Trump (for example) because our views are based on where we get our information from and even though we may have done our due diligence and uncovered ten layers of information that confirms our viewpoint, we are confronted with an obviously false sound-bite but the other person won't budge from it. This is not a 50/50 argument and this is where it can get very frustrating.

As an example, there's decades of public records about Trump's links to Russia but there are many people who don't believe a word of it or know what “Russia's meddling in US elections” even means. I know you do deep dives into things and have probably come across this site before but I'll just leave this here for others to have a look at https://theassetpodcast.org/

As for your last main paragraph, I couldn't agree more and said something almost identical in this thread here https://www.fansnetwork.co.uk/football/queensparkrangers/forum/312486/page:2
At the end of the day it's up to us to find our level so I'll leave you with a little mantra I heard 'when-I-were-a-lad'

Do what you can
It won't be enough
But it's better than doing nothing.

Peace out

I think that was me, I mentioned it in the Film 2025 thread as Demi Moore's name came up.

A thumbs up to whoever mentioned American Primeval and Paradise and if you are looking for something relatively light hearted, have a look at Lessons in Chemistry.

Now for episode 2 (series 2) of The White Lotus.

The turnaround is nothing short of amazing but let's keep our feet on the ground as we haven't blown anyone away and we could've easily drawn the last two games. The suggestion though that we can't say anything negative because we won....I don't know, we'll have to agree to disagree.

We are QPR, we have a history of grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory and even though we were 0-2 up with 15 to go, the sight of Madsen and Ashby warming up sent a shiver down my colon. I feared the worst because that's what we do and seeing Ashby ping the ball as hard as he could to no one in particular didn't ease the shivering. We won though, which is the main thing, but there's still room for improvement and I don't have a problem with people pointing out where we need to make those improvements.

Kolli had his day last week, today's was Saito's. Well done that man.

Here's a random addition to this thread. If Oxford win away at Stoke on Saturday, they will top the form table for the last 8 games. If they win that'll be 6 wins and two draws. They've had quite the turnaround since we comfortably beat them 2-0.

I just wonder if the almost universal "Oi! No! Marti's going nowhere!" from the fans (even though we were bottom) had any influence on the finger being removed from the trigger?

Who knows but I think we can all pat ourselves on the back anyway, we know a good QPR manager when we see one.

Onwards and upwards, we're in the single digit positions now. It's a funny old game.

I know the links have been posted but I'll just leave this image here.

It's a beautiful thing.

Loved Saito's goal, I scared a few people when that hit the net. It's great that all the new boys have been scoring lately, we are starting to look like a happy team again.

It's nice not to have to cherry pick the week to make us look good. Pick 4/6/8 or 10 weeks and we're either 1st or 2nd. Niiiiice

Nice to finally grind out a win against them. Frey and Chair still need to sharpen up their killer instinct but Kolli showed them how to do it. So pleased for him.

How about a few “not a lot of people know thats”
at 17:29 15 Jan 2025

Funny you should say that, here's what it says on its Wiki page...

"The Lone Ranger" was first released in 1976. After it was chosen as Tony Blackburn's BBC Radio 1 "Record of the Week" (the nationwide morning radio show with the highest ratings in the UK at the time), it was banned when some fragments of lyrics were deemed to contain references to drugs and homosexuality. The BBC stopped playing the record, and it failed to chart.

Quantum Jump disbanded at the end of 1977 but the band would, however, make an unexpected return two years later when a re-release of "The Lone Ranger" single became an unexpected hit. The song had been widely played by Kenny Everett on both his radio and TV shows. Re-released in 1979, it eventually reached number 5 in the UK Singles Chart.

The longest word in the world is

Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu, which is a hill in New Zealand. The Name was the inspiration for the 1979 hit "The Lone Ranger" by Quantum Jump. It was slightly altered to sound as if it were Native American, in keeping with the Lone Ranger and Tonto theme. It is chanted as follows:

Taumata-whaka-tangi-hanga-kuayuwo
tamate-aturi-pukaku-piki-maunga
horonuku-pokaiawhen-uaka-tana-tahu
mataku-atanganu-akawa-miki-tora

I've just watched the trailer for River and it reminded me of "Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes". I then saw in the comments that River is the director's bigger-budget follow-up to it so if you haven't seen it yet it's worth a watch.

Demi Moore looked great in Landman which is another great series staring Billy Bob Thornton, (following on from the excellent Goliath).
