I would have said his touch and technique - or lack thereof - is his entire problem. He can’t trap the ball, demonstrated in the second half against Oxford where he tried to put his foot on the ball, missed it and it rolled out for a throw in.

He has a wonderful attitude and some great physical traits but I cannot see a footballer in him in a million years. The ball is just never under control.

Also very true. I jsut asked Chat GPT what is the biggest nation England have knocked out of a World Cup in a match played outside of England...

The biggest team England has ever knocked out of a World Cup in a knockout game outside of England is **Argentina**. This happened during the **1986 FIFA World Cup** in Mexico, in the quarterfinals.

In that famous match, England defeated Argentina 2–1, with Gary Lineker scoring the winning goal. However, the match is most famously remembered for Diego Maradona's controversial "Hand of God" goal and his brilliant solo "Goal of the Century" shortly after.

This game remains a landmark in England's World Cup history, as Argentina was one of the tournament's powerhouses, and Maradona was arguably the best player in the world at the time.

I think what you're describing here is a pretty complicated set of models which learn from past performance to try to predict future performance. On any dataset in the world there are flaws to that concept as certain environmental factors don't get repeated and / or can't be predicted - like COVID for instance.

With football, so much changes week-to-week; team selections, weather, player availability, game schedules, etc etc. Let alone how much changes year on year. The QPR team of 2011 for instance would beat this one roundly and squarely about 98 times out of 100, Luton went from non-league to Premier League in 10 years, Brentford, Brighton, Forest have all been wildly different teams to they are now this century. All that considered, any model would probably largely ignore older data in favour of more recent points which would correlate far more accurately with current performance so there would be little point in gaining the data in the first place.

Companies charge a LOT of money to build data models of this type for corporations so I'd be a little surprised if any open source AI platform would just regurgitate it exactly how you want it. AI in this instance would be very useful to collect the data and probably build the algorithms to predict the future but the entire model as a whole would likely score itself very poorly in its ability to predict what happens next. No model on planet earth would ever have predicted us to win at Burnley in 2023 or Leicester last season. it would probably largely just confirm any intuition any one of us could have rather than predict outlying events and when they'll occur.

Just to point out there's a WLS article with quotes (in black and white and from the horse's mouth) from Cifuentes where he says:

"I keep repeating, the club needs to understand there are some things that we need to improve as a club that I’ve been saying since the summer and so far we have not improved those areas."

"One win, it’s a step forward, but we need to take many more – and we need help."

Doesn't sound massively like Marti is particularly pleased with the summer recruitment after all. I think from certain definitions that's a clearly supported point and we could start labelling it as a fact!

Don't shoot the messenger!

Indeed - Just my guesswork.

Agree about the injuries and having some or all of Colback, Clarke-Salter, Dembele, Frey and Paal to choose from will make a huge difference. I still don't like the decision to let Williams manage whatever he manages via Zoom from Dubai and again I'll guess that Marti isn't too happy about that either.

I just accidentally read this thread logged out so saw some aggressive toxicity that I've used the ignore function to try to avoid. I'm not going to be drawn into reacting and turn another thread into a slanging match.

Great win last night. I feel happy today.

I don't doubt anything written here and thanks for posting but I would point out there is a whole league of nuance between Marti being involved with the recruitment process and him being happy - or even not livid with it.

Even in a scenario where Marti signed off on every single one of the players brought in, it doesn't mean - for example - that he wasn't begging for another striker or a right back or a more combative midfielder or Isaac Hayden.

I've no doubt Marti sees benefit in all the players we've signed but from his interviews, his body language and based on what any one of us can conclude by looking at the squad list, I've also no doubt he's been left more than a tad frustrated by the squad he's been given. As well as the fact so many of his first team are unavailable and the guy held to account for their availability being on a different continent so he can earn multiple wages.

We'll never know the truth and to an extent we shouldn't as it belongs behind closed doors. Ultimately there's no way Nourry, Hoos or Marti himself will ever tell us what went on behind those closed doors with recruitment whilst they're still employed by the club. I'm pretty certain there were a lot of disagreements though and it was probably Marti's nose left out of joint rather than Belk or Nourry's.

I'm more than happy to give him credit and agree with the sentiment but surely the one and only reason he's persisted with Celar is there is absolutely no other option.

Absolutely this.

It's a squad thing, not an individual player thing. The full back depth always looked dicey and has been a huge problem for us over the last couple of months. Exactly the same with the strikers. Central midfield has been a huge problem, not because they're all terrible at football but we've rarely been able to field the right mixture of experience, industry and ball players.

We are definitely starting to see some bright spots though. Varane is progressing, Colback is nearly back so Varane, Field and Madsen won't be forced to play three games in 8 days over and over. Having both Frey and Celar available will enable us to have more than one plan. Morrison looks really comfortable. He and Clarke-Salter as a pairing is quite an exciting prospect... though I'm not sure we're quite ready to play without Cook.

Amazing what a win can do. I feel a million times more upbeat than this time yesterday. The next step is to get on a decent run. Six or seven points from the next nine would be literally transformational.

How does Nourry turn around what's happened? Relative to our turnover we spent big this summer, largely enabled by a couple of years of forced austerity. In Celar and Madsen in particular it feels like we won't be making any or much of it back.

I'm not just dismayed and angered by the poor quality of the squad, it's also what that spend will do to us in a three year P&S cycle. You just can't throw good money after bad hoping it goes better next time, the rules don't allow for it. If that window ends up being as bad as it looks right now, it'll dent our ability to put a squad together for three years. You can't just shrug it off and have another go.

Just to pile on even more misery, it's looking rather like we'll be in a position come next summer that those P&S rules won't apply to us in League One yet we'll have to cut our cloth with the expectation that they will once again come 2026 or 2027. Are we really going to trust the guy that oversaw this Kwarteng-esque window with an even more complicated situation next year?

And that's not even touching upon the look and feel of the place and the feeling of being a fan within his stewardship or the fact that half our squad is injured and our Performance Director is literally in Dubai.

I don't want to be overtly negative or pin everything on one man but ultimately he's overseen everything and signed off on the recruitment, the Performance Directorship, the 'Game Model' and now large swathes of the fans have got the hump with the communication, the previous miracle performing Head Coach looks completely exasperated and we're the worst team in the league. Prior to that window our form showed us to be in the top 10.

He's simply severed so many positive threads in such a short space of time. I wouldn't trust him with a single decision, a single strategy or a single cheque. Let alone let him navigate through the next complicated crisis that he's created himself. This summer was so poor in so many ways I can't see how he can fix what's now done, nor how his position is still tenable.
