| News Comment | Enough Is Enough ! Russell Martin Has To Adapt Or Go ! at 12:57:59
Haven’t seen the Saints live for a while, it’s been too saddening, but watched from just after Stephens was sent off last night. The passing around at the back is suicidal. Because we’ve not adapted our play that much over the season so far it is easy for the opposition to set traps for us and we simply fall in! When we break the press it looks good and even with 10 players last night we did that a few times quite well, but the rewards simply don’t warrant the risks we take. We’re going down, but I want Martin to stay, eventually learn from his mistakes, develop some pragmatism to our play and then bounce back up again and play a different style next time around. Controversial view I know, but constantly changing managers is no good. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Bournemouth The Verdict at 10:24:10
That was just plain awful! We look so fragile mentally. As soon as Bournemouth scored you could see the confidence evaporate. Playing tippy tappy requires confidence and when confidence isn't there we look a shambles. I like Russell Martin, but I've now come to the conclusion that his lack of pragmatism in how he sets us up to play and asks them to play will NEVER work in the Premier League and if he is not prepared to adapt and develop a Plan B then he should be asked to leave the club. |
| News Comment | Southampton Launch Bid For Brazilian Striker at 11:28:00
It seems clear that Alcaraz needs to be sold before money becomes available for a striker, but why has it taken so long for Alcaraz's sale to be concluded? It seemed fairly obvious that RM was prepared to let Alcaraz go for quite some time. The potential Alberto signing seems rather knee jerk to me and I just worry that we might be getting another Carrillo or a Tall Paul, although the latter hasn't really been given a proper chance. |
| News Comment | Southampton At West Bromwich Albion The Play Off Verdict at 18:01:47
From other reports I’ve read it seems that Adam Armstrong wasn’t happy with what he perceived as a lack of movement from Mara. Clearly it affected his performance. He always does better with Adams in the team. It was extremely disappointing to see Adams omission from the starting lineup yesterday! |
| News Comment | No Togetherness No Character No Fight at 20:38:58
I find RM’s press conferences rather bizarre at the best of times, but after the defeat last night bizarre is replaced with ridiculous! What on earth is he doing in saying we wouldn’t have lost 5-0 with JS in the team. It was nonsensical! He picks the teams! I have a tendency to agree with those who say he’s lost the plot. I |
| News Comment | Southampton At Leicester The Debacle at 06:37:46
Can see why we ship so many goals, stand off the player, stand off, stand off, oh he’s passed it for a goal! Must be down to how we train, coaches got to take a lot of blame! And is it me, but is Russell Martin so frustrating to watch at press conferences! |
| News Comment | Southampton At Cardiff City The Verdict at 12:03:35
I said at the beginning of the season after we suffered that string of defeats that it is the clubs with the best defensive records that normally win promotion and unfortunately it looks like I'm going to be proved right. Both Leeds and Leicester have conceded goals in the 30s, whilst we have conceded 56 to date. Ipswich are the anomaly with 53 against, but if they do go up they'll get battered in the Premier League because Premier League defenses are so much better and so their goals scored will drop off. Whilst our forwards couldn't hit a 'Cow's a--e with a banjo' on Saturday, ultimately it isn't the lack of goals that has killed us. Flynn Downes has been a big miss when he's been out and our inconsistent form has coincided with him not being regularly available. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Hull City The Verdict at 08:35:05
RM has to take responsibility for Tuesday night. A lot of our recent first half performances have been below par. You do have to wonder what is said by the Manager before the start of the game. In post match interviews he comes across as Mr Cool/Mr Considered. Perhaps he’s Mr Cool when doing his rallying call before the game rather than Mr Angry which I think our squad needs. We lack real leaders on the pitch and so it’s down to the Manager to give the team a verbal kick up the arse. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Stoke City The Verdict at 11:18:31
Have said before it is your defence that gets you promoted and so a first clean sheet is to be welcomed. But as JE suggests, don’t get ahead of yourself Mr Martin! |
| News Comment | Southampton At Middlesbrough The Verdict at 18:11:06
Totally agree with those who have posted about starting from the back. If the defence is no good you aren’t going to challenge in the league! Our defence has been found wanting over the last couple of years and yet RM is asking them to play out from the back. Doesn’t make sense and does point to RM putting his philosophy over a more practical approach based upon experience. If we are scarred as RM says then don’t get your defence to do things that their low confidence struggles with. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Leicester City The Verdict at 14:09:22
The fact remains, we will not get back to the Premier League shipping so many goals. The best defensive teams generally go up. It happened last season from the Championship. The playing out from the back tactic is far too risk when you have new players coming in and team confidence is low. If we carry on doing this against Ipswich we will get the same result. I'm not sure RM appreciates another way of playing, which is the most concerning thing of all. He has got to show quickly that he knows another way of playing and is prepared to implement it or its going to be another long hard season and I'll be voting for him to go! |
| News Comment | Southampton At Sunderland The (Damning) Verdict at 17:40:57
A simple fact - the three teams from last season’s Championship with the lowest goals conceded were the 3 clubs that were promoted. If we don’t sort this defence out soon we’ve got no chance. End of!!!!!!!! |
| News Comment | Southampton V Bournemouth The Verdict at 12:35:04
Our demise has gradually been happening over the last few years. For a good few seasons now teams have come to St Mary’s, parked the bus and we haven’t had the skill or guile to break them down and they go and score a goal or two on the break. No Manager has managed to find the answer and so you must conclude that the players are simply not good enough! |
| News Comment | Southampton Sack Nathan Jones at 16:30:15
Glad NJ has gone. He was out of his depth. Our deterioration over the last few years has imo coincided with lack of leadership on the pitch and when you get it from your manager as well then you’re doomed! Whoever comes in is going to need to find a leader ! |
| News Comment | Another Weird Quote Or Two From Nathan Jones at 22:54:15
If his team talks are anything like his press conferences then it’s no wonder that the Team could get confused about what they’re supposed to be doing on the pitch! The more he talks the more weird he sounds 😳 |
| News Comment | Southampton V Newcastle United The Carabao Cup Verdict at 23:15:36
Can’t question the team’s spirit, but in the first half in particular Newcastle had so much space around our box, it was embarrassing! Eddie Howe got his tactics right, Newcastle pressed us a lot and this meant that Bazunu kept on having to kick long and this was then easy for their defenders to deal with. Newcastle could really have been out of sight with a bit more luck! God do we need a striker as everyone keeps saying! We look devoid upfront! Mara has promise as does Edozie, but they’re both along way from finished articles. Really disappointed with Orsic, looks well off the pace. Both hand ball goals were right to be disallowed, but why couldn’t AA have volleyed it in? Seems to get his feet tangled a lot! Pope was definitely over zealous with his follow through on Djenepo. It was cynical! Don’t think Alcaraz should hold in midfield, he did a lot of good things, but Diallo looked over run at times and Lavia should have started with Alcaraz playing where Orsic was. Sorry to say this, but without a quality striker we look doomed in the league! 🥲 |
| News Comment | Southampton V Aston Villa The Preview at 16:37:35
Whatever the personnel for the Villa game JWP must continue to play in the advanced midfield role, he is wasted as a holder and turns into Butch Wilkins! We’ve ridden our luck against Palace (cup) and Everton (league), but the saying you make your own luck has never been truer. The extra intensity in our play is starting to bring dividends, but we need to keep that up and the crowd can certainly help! |
| News Comment | Southampton At Everton The Verdict at 19:11:03
In the absence of a proven Premier League goal scoring forward at the club currently it is essential that JWP is played further forward in every game. We had 5 efforts on target on Saturday and JWP had 4 of them. He had a classy game on Saturday and was extremely effective in the more advanced role. My other observation is that NJ is building some very positive relationships with the squad. Loved the interactions with the players after wins against City and Everton. Just hope that NJ has now built that trust needed with his squad to get the most out of them. He loves the siege mentality from the squad! |
