Kelman
at 10:44 25 Sep 2024

He's playing regular football, at a better level than a lot of the other loans we've sent out in the past have done. That's only a good thing. I'm not sure he'll make it with us, but a Kelman with a full season playing for Orient under his belt, will definitely be a better player than the one we saw last season, so there is still hope.

I know he's not Harry Kane, but Kane struggled a fair bit in his early days, had a few unsuccessful loans, around 22 when he really kicked on I think. Would be relaying that message to Charlie and see whether he can push on.

The major positive so far, and as others have alluded to, we’ve managed to pick up points while clearly being very disorganised and trying to work out our best team. We’ve come from behind to claim a point or more on a few occasions already this season – that’s massive for us. How many times last season and the season before, the opposition scoring first was pretty much game over. We’ve changed the narrative there. However, there’s no getting away from the fact somethings not right in our style. No composure, no guts to take the ball under pressure and play a pass that can split the lines. On occasions it’s just the very basic ability to control the ball and pass 5 feet which is going wrong. Home form has also been a major issue for some time.

But, a year of this team developing and learning about the Championship, making a call on those players not up to the level in the summer, and if required some further tweaking should be the plan. I think a Varane and a Saito in a year’s time will be very different players, better players, as will Dembele. The jury is out on Celar and Madsen but they too have shown glimpses. It’s not going to be a great season, it’s about putting the building blocks in place, but taking a look at what we’re like in a year’s time should be when we really judge the Manager, the signings and new structure at the club.

PS – I appreciate if we start dropping points, then the ‘next season plan’ is likely to be shelved but I hope we hold our nerve.

I’ve been disappointed with him. He did well under Marti when he arrived which made Ainsworth’s decision to rarely use him quite baffling. Also thought he was a bit unlucky no to play more when the new signings (Hayden) and others joined, which his performance against Coventry at the end of season showed. BUT since then, pre-season and the opportunities he’s had this season mainly in the cup, he’s really struggled. Playing poor passes, not showing any appetite to win the ball, and struggling to have any influence on the game. A big disappointment because I think he’s a good player potentially, but right now, he’s right down the pecking order for me.

A few people, myself included, sometimes raise concerns about the amount of 'old boys' we employ when they finish playing. A look at that BBC article and Jon Walters is Sporting Director and Ryan Shawcross is running the under 21s. Doesn't seem that long ago they were playing and already in key positions within the club.

A "wispy ball bag for a head" haha. Indeed, I don't get how he always runs the show against us. Agree with the comments about the keeper. MOTM for me and made some great saves, but it's how comfortable he is with his feet whch really impressing me. A few times, some proper decent passes floated over to Santos when in space. Passes an outfield player would be proud of. Looks a really good signing to me.

It’s going to be tough to implement though when your best ball playing centre back is injured and his direct replacement is too from the sounds of it. Cook and Dunne can’t break the lines with their passing and Field’s not an option for getting us moving up the pitch.

Very poor but we got something and this team really is showing itself to have that ability to bounce back when they fall behind which will be massive for us.

A point would be a good result but I do think we can get something more. Decent time on the training pitch for most the squad, Frey full of confidence, agree with the 2-1 prediction.

True. I liked that the Manager said Madsen was disappointed with his performance too, shows a lot more to come from him.

Lol could well have done. Was multi-tasking (doing my day job) while listening so did miss parts of that discussion, although don't think there's any harm in having a wager on who you think will be least successful of the new recruits because 1 of them is bound to fail right? Would be unheard of if they all make it.

Yeah enjoyable listen, "sh*t on a cake" is something I'll have to use in future.

Interesting that of the the players listed as the potential "failures", (harsh to discuss at this point but it's fans chatting and predicting and we all hope none of them are etc), but I was surprised nobody said Madsen. The right back is the obvious one but he cost next to nothing right? I always view failures as when you spend a bit of money on someone and everything say's they should be decent but turn out to be poor. Fingers and toes crossed all ours are great, and tbh I've seen enough in all of them to say they could do well for us "Long term" if given time, but if I had to call out one now, I'd have gone for Madsen. Jim especially, seemed to have seen someone a lot more athletic and mobile then me when it comes to Madsen.

Great report, which described the game perfectly.

In terms of Frey, think the rating was fair. The guy was a monster and everything I want my number 9 to be but I felt he went a bit quiet from about 25 mins to halftime - he suffered along with the rest of the team - and felt his pass to Dembele (after he'd done some good build up work) was behind him and meant he had to check back and the chance was missed. Absolutely minor and trivial stuff and probably the best individual performance so far by one of ours, but for me puts you into the 8s rather than 9s/10s category.

To get a 9 you need to be on it for pretty much the whole 90 and not put a foot wrong so Frey would just miss out on that.

Ok, I could make it clearer and specifically say that once you’ve had some time to adapt, you’re more familiar with your surroundings, and started to bed-in you can’t hide in the Championship, you need to want the ball and be prepared for things to go wrong but have the courage to go again etc.

Having a decent touch, playing 1 or 2 nice passes is great, but over 90 minutes in this league, you need to do a lot more and not hide, something I felt he did a bit on Friday but as I said, no complaints, it’s a massive change for him, everything is new, he needs time to adapt and to be cut some slack…BUT in the future, if he delivered what he did, I personally don’t think it’s good enough, which was my point because a few people have mentioned to me they do think it was good enough, flagging the goal.

In answer to the other posters question, I thought he struggled to make himself available to receive the ball so couldn't really have any influence on the game. He seemed a bit static and didn't do enough to show for the ball.

Agree with all the comments about him needing time and totally unfair to give him stick at this stage of his Rangers career. However, I’m worried that some people seem to think he played quite well against Luton. I thought he was way off it, and looked slightly overawed by the occasion which isn’t totally a surprise given fairly intimidating ground to play at for your first live Friday night game. Credit to him for sticking with it and getting the goal which he did take very well, and that will only be a good thing for his confidence, but if that was Anderson, Field or Colback that produced a fairly anonymous performance like that, they’d rightly be getting criticised.

You can’t hide in the Championship, you have to want the ball and be prepared to make mistakes. He has ability, he just needs to believe in himself and get himself up for the battle. I do think our Team potentially misses a player like him, but we can't afford to carry players, so here's hoping he kicks-on.

Acca payout, stories of success

Not had a bet for a while but remember my biggest win was around £350 and was a total fluke. Did my then usual of £20 on 3 or 4 home wins (think we may have formed part of the bet) and couldn’t understand why the odds were so good and if I won, I’d be getting so much, then realised I’d done BTTS and win by mistake. Luckily, it was fate and got my biggest ever win which I’ve never come close to repeating.

Agree with this.

Looking at his performance in isolation, it was poor. Taking into account everything else (new to league, step up in level, only 2nd game, experience etc), he needs to be cut a lot of slack. I don’t think people are being that harsh with him.

Yeah how I’ve seen it. Madsen needs to do a lot more and sort his feet out. Lloyd, showing a lack of quality on the ball. Thought Frey looked bright early on but faded a bit now. Poor goal to giveaway

"Kakay's fine when he plays in a back 3..." I beg to differ.

"Should have kept Barbet" conveniently forgetting he was only really good for us in a back 3 and pretty poor when played in a 4.

Found his performance reassuring.

He looked like he had some potential, a bit stronger than I remember, awareness of play going on around him also seemed better. Clearly he will need a bit of time to get up to speed. I liked Dave Mc's view on what a good season would be for him - if he can get around 8-10 goals that would suggest he has some ability, but will also mean he's likely to have gone through some tough spells as well and will show his character. We need to back him and support him and certainly not be writing him off this early in his Rangers career.

Don't remember much of that but have to say some decent goals in there in terms of movement and finishing. Not how I remember his time with us though.
