Anyone still want VAR in the championship
at 04:45 5 Sep 2022

I cannot stand VAR.
I do not go to football matches to find out which team will score the most entirely legitimate goals. I go to get that rush when the ball hits the back of the net. And VAR is messing with that. It's that simple. And if it comes to QPR games I tell myself that I'll call it a day (almost certainly not true but that's how much I hate it).
But...
All the football managers, pundits and crucially fans that moaned endlessly about incorrect decisions paved the way for VAR to be introduced. And as fans of a championship team we have still got that choice to make. My unsolicited advice to anyone that hates VAR is simmer down about bad refereeing decisions, and accept them as the lesser of two evils right now. Yes, they're infuriating, but if we keep complaining about them then eventually a room full of people will decide that VAR might help in the championship. And as we're seeing with the prem, no matter how clearly it isn't working, once these things are introduced they are very hard to roll back.
The timekeeping situation on the other hand is a genuine disgrace. Cost of living crisis and fans are being routinely miss-sold tickets to watch 90 minutes of football. Rant and rave about that for all your worth...

Car advice - 7 seater
at 07:09 25 Aug 2022

Bought a zafira about 5 years ago for less than £3k and it's done us proud so far. No idea about any others (or cars in general!).

Only things I'd say are:

We've 'only' got 3 kids and still ended up buying a big roof box. Game changer. So much nicer not spending hours trying to stuff everything into the boot and close it before everything comes tumbling out across a car park.

And from what I can gather, the used car market is ridiculous at the minute. We've put 5 years and 20 odd thousand miles on our zafira and it looks like it will barely have gone down in value. No idea whether this is likely to change any time soon.

And finally: if you're on car seats, I reluctantly found isofix worth the extra cash.

Good luck!

More nonsense being discussed

On the time wasting issue, why isn't it as simple as adding even more time for it. +30 seconds for cheeky little ones, +60 for more blatant incidents. Would take less balls for the referee to apply and actually make time wasting counterproductive. Few 5.30 final whistles and then that would be the end of it no?

Just think it's the opposite to most QPR fans' mentality.

Only a few weeks ago a Sheffield United fan was telling me how many points they were behind Fulham.

Meanwhile, back in January I put one message on one whatsapp group, that I was starting to think that even we'd find it hard not to make the playoffs from our position. And I've hated myself ever since.

Other highlights of this season:
ITK types reporting that even if they don't go up, Johnson won't leave because he's 'proper Forest'.
Overhearing a lively debate about whether Djed Spence will end up at Liverpool or Real Madrid.
Not a single Forest fan I know understanding why the 'Welcome to the world famous City Ground' tannoy announcement is funny.
Plums.

Always say football fans are much of a muchness, but forest fans really do seem to have a particular trait of unwarranted smugness. I live in Nottingham and the pub last night was full of grown men with straight faces saying things like "It's good because now we'll get a trophy when we go up" and "you get more money for going up by the play-offs".
Please god let them lose the final on penalties...

Brain Haemorrhages (non-QPR)
at 11:45 11 Apr 2022

To lift the mood a bit (actually, genuine apologies if this thread brings up painful memories for anyone), my Mum's fella had a brain haemorrhage last week.

Apparently he had an 'acute on chronic' bleed which so far they can't identify a cause for. He was treated by burr hole drilling (when the NHS is good, it is truly humbling to see), he came round really well (seemed to have movement and understanding etc) but has since dipped a bit (last night thought he was in prison).

Dr's are understandably reluctant/unable to say much at the minute and was just wondering if anyone had any knowledge, advice or experiences out there? I'm mainly supporting my mum rather than personally effected so no need to sugar coat things.

Feigning Injury to Waste Time - Change Rules - Immediate Yellow Card
at 05:33 10 Dec 2021

My two cents:
Football authorities should compile and publish stats on this stuff, which refs are encouraged to take into account.
Examples:
Each club could have percentages for how often one of their players goes down/off and is playing again within 2 minutes, in games when they're winning, drawing or losing.
Likewise, data on how many times individual players have done it in the last three seasons.
It's not perfect but would make players and clubs responsible for their own treatment, give refs something to justify their decisions to themselves and everyone else, and hopefully introduce some old fashioned shame and pride into football culture.
I'd also suggest a similar thing for diving.

Anyone know if it'll be sitting in allocated seats there? In case you want to sit with someone who'll have to buy their ticket on a later day than you, if that makes sense.

Taking my Son to his first game tomorrow

My dynamite tip for getting kids through football is a variation on a drinking game. Put 2p or 5p in a pot for every throw in, corner, goal kick etc. Obviously you can do it on your phone at live games.
If QPR score at any point they get to keep whatever's in there. Other team scores it goes back to zero. They'll be paying attention and my two were cheering us on like instant die hards!

How to combat the high press
at 06:45 28 Feb 2021

To my (ignorant) mind the main question here is how do you feel about using your keeper in possession. If you want to avoid it then the best you can do is try to get individual players to beat their marker through movement, pace or skill and then you're a man over somewhere. If you are willing to pass to your keeper against a high press and one of their players go to him then you should have a man free somewhere? Get the ball to him and in theory you've got the upper hand? Problem is, he's likely to be a defender, still miles away from their goal, and whilst this sounds great, feels like for every goal you create for yourselves this way you ship ten embarrassing soft ones. So, I've been working on my own highly technical solution with my kids team and have invented something I describe as Having Offensive Opportunities Forged By Always Looking Long. Just trying to think of a fancy sounding acronym now....

First time watching QPR / Reason why you became a fan
at 12:44 19 Jan 2021

As ridiculous as it sounds I'm actually a QPR glory hunter!

As a young kid a combination of Gary Lineker and having family in North London meant I was a Spurs fan, with a slight soft spot for QPR because I also liked Paul Parker.

Then in '92 and '93 Lineker went to Japan and QPR finished 5th, so greedily eyeing a future of success and trophies I jumped ship, aged 10 which is pretty late I'd say. I was clearly a smart lad eh?

I guess in '96 when it all fell apart I felt I'd reached the point of no return. And I suppose the next two and a bit decades are a fitting punishment for my treachery...

Championship salary cap

I seem to be alone on this but my earth shattering idea is demand more effing money from the premier league. Worst case scenario it leads to a split. Long term, would that really be such a bad thing for most football league clubs and fans? And let's see how clever the premiership looks with about 150 dead rubbers a season...

West Brom report - plus discussion about this site next season, feedback welcome
at 08:07 26 Jul 2020

First off, Clive, I think it's safe to say that you'd be pretty freaked out if you realised just how much your writing means to a lot of us. I don't know exactly what I'd do if you jacked it in, but I'm pretty sure there'd be a pitchfork involved.

Just to lob in my two cents, my question would be do you actually want to be a full-time football journalist? Only if you do, I'd say you really are good enough to think a little bigger than the ideas here, which all limit you to the QPR fan base. My suggestion would be just do the previews and match reports for us QPR fans, and then set up another site where you write about other football stuff (perhaps with a bit of a championship lean), where half of the content is behind a paywall (like the Independent website). All of us Loftforwords folks would obviously sign up as a thank you, but I think there's probably a pretty big market for longer, funny, down to earth but well-informed, football related content. I certainly often share your stuff with mates who support other teams when we play them and they love it, but they're unlikely to come back to read about our game with Barnsley the week after.

Just a thought. Get in touch if you're at all interested 'cause I'm looking for something to invest a bit of energy into (lockdown soul searching and all that).
