Southampton At Portsmouth The Verdict
at 16:02:18

We played with improved spirit; would that we could always register so highly in the blood-and-guts department! But it has to translate into goals, and aside from Scienza, of course, it didn't.

The Daily Echo Hints At Where The Problems Are In Saints Dressing Room
at 15:49:33

It's felt as if our best players have been playing bit parts for much of the past two months. One wonders where this is going. But one thing is clear: the body language on and off the pitch says it all.

Southampton At Middlesbrough The Verdict

All four goals entailed defenders losing their marks and leaving them in acres of space. It was the greatest advert yet that a back three doesn't suit us.

We need more predictability at the back and less predictability in the attacking end. A 4-4-2 can provide this presently.

Southampton At Oxford United The Preview
at 14:20:11

Back in my school days, when our football team lacked talent and ability at all positions, we always placed the paciest guy at forward because, even though he too wasn't all that good, he could at least race past everybody into space, and sooner or later he'd score. This worked a charm—when he finally learned to finish. I'm hoping that Archer can be that man, proving that any player with pace in space is dangerous.

Southampton V Coventry City The Preview

Each week i think that Coventry are due for some regression to the mean, but each week they buck that trend. I don't know how they do it. This week they're contending with an influenza outbreak, so that may affect the outcome. Tomorrow's result may well augur the future of both clubs.

Tonda Eckert Confirmed As Southampton Manager

So, in the end (at least for the time being), the Still hire was a success, because he brought Eckert with him! Thanks Will!

Southampton At Millwall The Verdict
at 18:45:42

I'll use my own arthritic fingers to echo underwestand's own in pointing out that Millwall looked every bit the part of the sides we'll need to beat to enter the playoff places. Much credit should be due them for our wake-up call. We lost, but we this defeat should remind us of how far we've come and how far we've yet to go.

Tonda Eckert Hits The Top Spot In Bookies Favourites List
at 18:19:23

Can't see Marsch leaving Canada MNT with a World Cup (which of course they're hosting) on the horizon. The fact that we can think of it suggests a thin field getting thinner. I wonder that, if we don't act now, we'll only have Eckert—which mightn't be a bad thing, as we've time because we're not going up this year.

Southampton V Sheffield Wednesday The Verdict
at 17:58:04

This is a longshot, but would Gary Monk be worth a mention? He's dropped down the managerial rungs of late, having last worked at U's. But I once thought kinda highly of him, when he was at Swansea. He played for us, and has coached with James Beattie, who'd be nice to have around as well. But this may be neither here nor there, the ramblings of one who's weary of the coaching merry-go-round and grasping at straws.

Southampton V Sheffield Wednesday The Verdict

Frankly, i don't know why O'Neill is in the conversation at all. It's easy to dismiss him outright for his Pompey connections. But Russell Martin has considerably more success as a manager than O'Neill does, and despite what the players apparently are saying we should be ruling Martin out, too. Surely there are better gaffers out there. For wont of anyone else, I'd like to see Carrick get some consideration; possession ball at quicker pace sounds good to me.

Southampton At Queens Park Rangers The Verdict
at 19:08:12

Dunno what could have been expected, with a team lacking in confidence and having lost their manager just three days prior. It was always going to be nervy. Despite the inevitable mistakes—for which we largely went unpunished (because you make your luck as much as you ride it)—I saw a side with considerably more urgency and purpose. And though the formation was largely the same, the tactics were noticeably different: We swapped having two-thirds of the possession and nothing to show for it for one-third of the possession and two converted chances we'd ordinarily have missed. In other words, we let the game come to us. It may not have been pretty, but i'm satisfied and think we can build on it.

Southampton Sack Will Still
at 05:32:51

It's dumb that we've become a managerial carousel; all that wasted work—for the squad and the manager—of relearning the curve each time. Still was very much unproven, especially in the English game, so we have to chalk this up to an experiment that didn't work. At least we didn't wait til the season was well and fully gone to make the change. All i ask is someone who has (1) the b*lls to make commonsense squad decisions that need making, and (2) the patience and belief to really grow something at Soton. [I know some folks won't take this tack, but i wonder if second-time round Ralph may well fit those requirements.]

Southampton V Preston North End The Preview

When we have a big squad, all of whom are competitive in the Championship, the "out injured" excuse wears thin quickly. Still should be able to win with our personnel. If he doesn't recognize what we've got, and has frozen out some players so early in his tenure, he needs to take a look in the mirror. I think your preview says as much in so many words, Nick, and i'm here for it.
