Saints Legends To Play Game To Raise Money For Chris Nicholl's Care Costs
at 11:40:39

Although I live in France and can't make it across to the game, I would like to contribute -- is there a fundraising page on the internet anywhere. Well I remember the centre back pairing of Nicholl and Pickering (or Pickle and Knickering) as on of the great partnerships in Saints history.

A Satisfying Transfer Window For Southampton. Part 1 The Outgoings
at 11:21:18

Not sure I agree about Danny Ings. Having reached retirement age, i recognise that life as a professional footballer is very insecure and short lived. Peak earnings are about ten years and that means you have to provide for your future which may be even more insecure andcomes with no guarantees of employement/earnings. Anyone who thinks that being a club legend outweighs the chance to secure your and your family's future needs to take a hard look at themselves.
Even Ward-Prowse has allied being a legend with the opportunity of becoming a millionaire every ten weeks. Danny Ings is 4/5 years further into an already injury-raddled career and will never have the chance to regain those earnings.
I would have liked him to stay (I've been a saints fan for 56 years now -- feels like longer) but recognise his reasons for going - the 'playing for bigger club/trophies/european experience stuff is just guff anyway.

Saints At Watford The Verdict
at 22:47:30

Only watched it on the box but I have to say that was the best I have seen Vestergaard play - he played Deeney out of the game - and especial worry given our tendency to give in to bullying so frequently. I'm not sure Deeney got a touch all game. Walker-Peters also looked very accomplished at right back - good in the attacking play and actually turning up for defensive duties (unlike Valery). Great team display - really lifting the spirits after the Arsenal game.

On This Day In History - FA Cup Semi Final 1976 Part 1

Great day - I can remember driving up behind a Saints Supporters Coach that had a huge banner blazoned across the back window: 'Eastleigh is an anagram of EAGLE SHIT'. Why? I'll never know.

Saints V West Ham United The Verdict
at 12:41:14

No point in 'posting bad language' - especially as I ran out about 7.00 last night. Will the club refund the £10.00 I spent on a Now TV pass to watch this load of rubbish?
Whenever we had the opportunity to break on West Ham, we seemed to slow right down and pass either backwards or sideways (if feeling bold). The body language isn't great (witness cedric when Long shot into the side netting after Ings hit the bar -- ironic given the pass Cedir hit to adams in from of goal the other week). I wonder if there is an absence of feeling for the club - I'm more inlined to think that it's all so important that players 'freeze'. Hojbjerg in particular seems burdened by emotion to the point he is almost inert, giving the ball away with simple passes. People praise Bednarek for his commitmnt and his passion, sadly not for his defending which is committed but not very effective. this is not to single these players out, they would appear to suffer from the collective fear and from the lack of investment in proper areas of the team.
Having sat throuh every one of Saints' relegations since 1966, the signs are there, total lack of confidence, distraction and lack of creativity.
Are we sure Rickie Lambert wouldn't last 60 minutes? It would help.

Time To Identify The Real Cause Of Saints Problems !
at 11:08:50

Having done a round trip of 320 miles on Sunday to see the Chelsea game, I feel I am qualified to put my two penn'orth in. We simply have no central defence. Why have we not even attempted to replace van Dyck and Fonte? While we work the minutest chances at one end, we show our opponents huge gaps and zones where they can stroll about and hurt us.
Playing the ball around our centre backs and wingbacks gives an illusion of stability when, within seconds, the ball is turned over and we are back under pressure.
I hate criticising individuals but what does JWP do again? Apart from taking corners, he is pretty much a passenger. Even his much vaunted free kicks are no longer on target, let alone goalworthy.
I have been a Saints fan for nearly 55 years and this is NOT the worst side I've seen... but we need new personnel to make us a) safe and b) capable of developing up the table.

Saints Squad Had A Clear The Air Meeting !
at 16:53:55

I have watched Hojbjerg a number of times in the development squad game highlights. Win lose or draw, he has been prominent tidying up and driving on. This must be why he was bought, and perhaps we see a longer period of adjustment now for incomers to the Premier League.I really rate him and can see him as a mainstay of the side for a long time.

Have Saints Fans Had Enough Of Victor Wanyama ?
at 14:15:44

Have now looked at the '60 seconds highlights' about 50 times and would like to point out that Maya's goal was set up by Victor - not through any great skill but that 2 West Ham defenders effectively pulled out of the challenge because his presence is so intimidating. When he contributes he is special - when he doesn't he looks ungainly and clumsy.

What Was Your First Ever Saints Game ?
at 16:58:01

I remember my first game clearly -- apart from who we were playing! It was an evening game in 1966 -- before we had been promoted. My friend Dickie and I bunked off cubs in Chandlers Ford and took the 47A to Southampton. Dickie was an old hand and we leapt off at Stag Gates and walked down the Northam Road to the Archers Road stand. Once we had paid our 1s 6d, we worked our way to the side of the terraces and, when we thought no-one was looking, we jumped over the side wall into the narrow concrete walkway until we came out underneath the East Stand. We wormed our way up to the halfway line and that's where I saw my next 10-15 games.
The Archers Road gave way to the Milton Road, Ted Bates gave way to Lawrie McMenemy and the chip shop (and Plesteds Pies) at the bus station gave way to the pub. It's coming up 50 years now - next year will have to be a special celebratiopn
With a faithful group of friends (now dispersed all over the country) we have been to two FA cup finals, have seen Saints play in Europe (many times) and seen the despair of relegation to League One and almost certain extinction turned to joy, epitomised by the JP Trophy final -- surely one of the most satisfying days to be a Saint, EVER!

Schneiderlin To Earn £120k A Week At Old Trafford
at 11:03:07

While the loss of Schneiderlin will be felt deeply, and I am not so confident as some that we will sign a 'replacement', I wish Morgan every success at wherever he goes to. Unlike the other 'stars', he really impressed me last season. When his move away was blocked, he could have responded very differently -- but he gave us a season of excellence and his value has probably increased as a result. Good for him. If someone offered me the reported £120,000 per week I'd seriously consider acts of violence against my Granny, let alone playing football for another team.
Good luck, Morgan -- I wouldn't bother too much about a full page ad in the Echo, just a heartfelt tweet would do.

Osvaldo Set To Complete Inter Milan Move
at 14:15:49

I have been a Saints fan since 1965 and have seen some terrible times and, of course, some great times. Part of me is still reeling from the sale of Martin Chivers to Spurs and I'm not entirely sure I've forgiven Mike Channon for his brief sojourn at Citeh. Barely a year ago, we were grateful to have remained in the PL with perhaps a game or so to spare. Now we are reacting as if the European Champions League has been snatched from our grasoping hands.
I believe Koeman will get it sufficiently right to see us into the next 5 year plan. I believe that the players we are getting in want to play for the club and that they will give of their best. Much as I would love (I'd reeeeeeeally love...) us to beat Liverpool 9-0 on day one then it might not happen. I'd like to see the two Celtic players coming in and I'd like us to play football the likes of which I could only dream of before last season -- although I still think we could be stronger against the bigger teams.
In short -- it doesn't really matter who's coming in, we have a good team that will still get better.
I, for one, am really looking forward to this season, and the four after it!
Koeman you Reds!!!

Who Will Captain Saints Next Season

Nick -- wouldn't you consider Stephen Davis? International captaincy experience and a solid, reliable presence on the field. I expect him to be playing more this season and think he'd do a splendid (and dignified) job.

Can Saints Buy And Improve Without Selling Key Players
at 09:37:04

Along with most Saints fans, I have been dreading the news that any of our stars are succumbing to temptation and leaving.. but take a little heart from Roberto Martinez' comments about the transfer market. He wishes all ex-players well in 'their new jobs' and is 'very excited' about the prospct of new players joining the club.
I was devastated when Martin Chivers left us but soon found new heroes -- although I wouldn't place Frank Saul (the transfer makeweight) in that bracket.

17 Games ! 17 Points !
at 11:29:13

From watching Saturday's game on telly, I question whether Rodriguez is actually a plus in our formation. he's far from a natural goalscorer and his first touch is not up to the mark. I suppose that Osvaldo was initially bought to supply goals but failed to deliver. Rickie now looks out of place and ....our leading scorer needs perhaps 10-15 chances to put the ball in the net.
Our football is as good as I've ever seen from Saints (50 years this coming year) but we need someone reliable in front of goal if we are to take the next step up.
