If there was any truth in this story (and I very much doubt it - most of the so-called 'investigative sports journalism' these days is written up without any basis of fact), Derby (and this board in particular) would snap their hands off.

£5m for a young (albeit what appears to be a highly-talented) player who hasn't even clocked up half a dozen competetive matches yet, is a no-brainer. If we were certain that sort of fee was ploughed back into the team then I would say take it.

Thing is, the manager would be lucky to get half of it - the argument being it's the first return on our investment in the clubs' youth development programme

Where's me season ticket?
at 20:11 16 Aug 2012

Not received mine or the lads so rang the 0871 number (what a nerve to charge for enquiring about the whereabouts of something they've sold you yet not delivered!)
Must admit I got through more or less straightaway and was told if they haven't arrived in Saturdays' post then to ring again (yes - at my cost!) and they would print a repplacement ticket which I could collect before the match. God help them if I'm in a queue and miss the kick-off

I was pleasantly surprised when he was with us and disappointed he wasn't signed up last season.
However, I think that ship has sailed and his probably not inconsiderable salary is best kept to secure the striker(s) we desparately need

Whilst I agree that you need a blend of experience and youth, I don't understand how we were lucky as you call it with the young players who came through last season. They played as well as they did through a combination of natural talent (spotted by someone employed at the club) and good coaching - how is that lucky?

If our defence now becomes the weak point of the team (no matter whether we sign a recognised goalscorer or not), NC & the board had better put their tin hats on because they're going to be slated - maybe unfair on the manager if he's under pressure to sell.

Fans reject Friday night games
at 21:22 1 Jul 2012

already sent mine and if everyone who's angry and annoyed by this dreadful p.r. action do the same, at least they will be made aware as to the strength of feeling amongst the fans................

"Never having previously emailed the Club directly, the announcement that 3 matches have been switched from the traditional Saturday afternoon to Friday evening shows a further disregard for the real fans.
The decision-makers at Derby County appear to be going out of their way to alienate more and more supporters by actions such as this. The reason given that it allows further resting time between midweek and weekend games doesn’t stack up — if there is a benefit then surely it will be to both sides, not just Derby.
I have no doubt that my (and probably a few thousand more fans’) criticism will fall on deaf ears. We keep being told about how wonderful the Derby County ‘experience’ is — people making such foolhardy comments are deluded and if the club continues to go down this path, then they will see an erosion of core support to an extent that has never been seen before and supporters will not return no matter what.
Disregard my comments and you will see the depth of feeling amongst real supporters and I’m speaking as a fan since 1979 and a season ticket-holder for probably 25 of those years

This tinpot idea doesn't make sense. Surely if it extends the number of days inbetween weekend and midweek matches for Derby players to recover then doesn't the same benefit apply to the opposition?

Jason Shackell?

Can't see that happening - he was signed for £5m so I can't see him going anywhere for less than £1.5 so what would be the point - Shackell is a much more reliable defender.
What would we choose - a central defence of Shackell and O'Brien/Buxton with Robinson up front as the main striker or O'Brien and Buxton with a recognised 20 goal a season hit-man (as yet unidentified)?
I'm not sure

Listening to the latest NC interview he's saying that he doesn't have the £1.5m required to sign a proven goalscorer - obviously that would change if Shackell was to go but my reading of it is that he still won't go. Hope not because he's proved his value to the defence throughout all of last season and any replacement has to start from scratch in terms of building a partnership with one of our other central defenders - whether it's Mark O'Brien or Buxton

Rabb - if you're not sure what to make of it why then do you think Shackell is on his way. From what I remember NC said if the right offer came in they would have to consider it and isn't that the approach of 95% of clubs (including those in the Premiership)? Doesn't mean he's going and my money would be on him staying. I might be proved wrong - only time will tell

Rabb - how can you be so sure of the fee for McGuire? I'm always amazed how people come out with this sort of stuff & unless they are actually 'in the know' it's just a guess which is tailored to support their view.

If some club offered £1.5m for Robinson I would snap their hand off. Theo is a 100% trier and I would never knock him for that - but unlike some, I can't see him progressing beyond his current level and that sort of fee would go a long way to securing a 'natural' goalscorer

What a ridiculous post! If (and I mean if) those players were sold and Clough was to leave us in the lurch then your comments might carry some degree of credibility but where's your evidence. The only player in the last 4 years I've been sad to see leave was Commons and he was the sort of character that no matter who he was with at the time would follow the dollar. Good players in - Bryson, Shackell, Barker, Ward, Brayford to name but a few

The trouble is that the vast majority of players will still think they have a devine right to carry on paddling their feet in the pool known as Premiership wages. That apart (and trying to convince myself that they might come to Derby for footballing reasons), to fill some of our key positions I would go for:
Left back (initially cover only) - Joe Mattock (WBA)
Midfield organiser - Danny Murphy (Fulham)
Goalscorer - Andy Johnson (Fulham) or Ricardo Fuller (Stoke)
No chance you're thinking........and you're probably right but interesting to speculate nonetheless

Hendricks to Norwich?
at 13:36 3 May 2012

Much as I would be sad to see a young talent leave when we haven't even seen him mature fully for another 2-3 years, Premiership clubs are quite happy to take a punt at the sort of fee quoted of £2m (though lets remember, its the Daily Star we're talking about) and Derby will be seriously tempted.
Like it or not, we need to face facts - the only way we're going to scrape together the money to recruit a striker (fee & wages) to do the business for us is by selling some of our assets.
But - forget comparisons with Southampton and Reading - some of their youngsters went for £10+ and with the best will in the world, we have no-one on the books in that bracket (yet).

Who is now surplus to requirements?

To let Maguire go after his spell at Pompey would be premature in my view but can't argue with the rest of the list.
I'd add Deeney (if he's still on the books)

Review of season !
at 14:42 26 Apr 2012

I agree - a balanced assessment of where we are based on a combination of our results, level of injuries, quality of squad now compared with the last 2 years, team spirit and contributions from the youngsters. Not Norwich or Southamptonesque but going in the right direction and when were we last able to say that.
The critical issue is now whether the improvement is sustainable (and maybe able to be made at a faster pace), given the relatively paltry level of investment in the club. Well I for one will be there again next season to see first hand the answer
