Pompey weigh up who to put on the pitch - and when
Monday, 21st Jan 2019 23:12 by pompey-fans.com staff

Pompey will give at least one or two senior first-teamers the night off when they take on Peterborough in the last eight of the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday.

The club say the likes of Dan Smith and Matt Casey are likely to be involved against Posh while others on the fringes of the first team could get a place in the squad.

The Blues are anxious not to over-exert their troops with the QPR FA Cup tie coming up on Saturday and, more importantly, league games against Luton and Doncaster to follow next week. That's especially the case after back to back league defeats.

Boss Kenny Jackett told the Pompey website: 'We realise that we’ve got a busy run of games — not just with QPR on Saturday, but then Luton and Doncaster next week in the league.

'As a squad we’ve got to be capable of dealing with that and we wouldn’t expect all our players to be involved in five games in 15 days. The majority of the senior teams left in the competition will be looking at their forthcoming league matches as well.

'Peterborough have got quite a deep squad, although I’m sure they’ll also have one eye on facing Charlton at the weekend. But, like us, they’ll desperately want to win on the night — especially as we’re getting close to Wembley now.

'We’ve done well to get through a number of stages in this competition — and it’s been good to us so far. There have been some positive performances and we want to see that continue. Peterborough are generally a force in League One every season and finished just outside of the play-offs last time.

'They’re ahead of that now and definitely have the ability to finish in the top six — both in terms of the players and the manager.'
