Rochdale look set to strengthen their defence with the signing of experienced centre-back Laurence Maguire following his departure from Milton Keynes.

The 29-year-old, younger brother of England and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, is available on a free transfer after being released by the newly-promoted League One side at the end of his contract.

Reports suggest Dale have beaten off competition to secure his signature, although the move is yet to be officially confirmed.

A left-footed central defender, Maguire came through the academy at Chesterfield before making his senior debut in 2016.

He went on to establish himself as a key figure for the Spireites, making 167 appearances and scoring nine goals. During his time there, he also enjoyed a loan spell with AFC Fylde.

In the 2023/24 campaign he spent the season on loan at Crawley Town, playing a major role in their promotion from League Two with 39 appearances and three goals before joining MK Franchise that summer.

Across two seasons at Stadium MK, Maguire made 47 appearances, scoring twice, as they secured promotion to League One last season.

Despite that success, he was one of several players released following the campaign.
