Report: Burton 1 Dale 0

Manager of the month curse? Playing on the Sabbath? Or just a case of all good things coming to an end? Make you own mind up, as Dale came away from Burton with nothing to show for it. Report online now.

Our first impressions of the Pirelli Stadium was something of a disappointment. Pirelli has always meant one thing and it's nothing to do with tyres, so it was a let down to see a lack of calendars around the place, but as a stadium, it certainly seemed to get the thumbs up from Dale fans.

Three sides of terracing, with almost a feel of Torquay's Plainmoor ground to it, and a smashing looking main stand with enough corporate stuff to allow them to bring in enough coins to compete in this division.

It had its oddities though. There was clearly some sort of distorted view from the side terrace due to the frequent bizarre reactions from the home fans in that terrace. They'd also clearly took inspiration from Accrington with Ultra style flags behind the goal, including the only Union Jack flag seen inside a football ground since 1986.

Feeling on the terraces at the final whistle was one that this had been a poor performance by Dale, and we got exactly what we deserved. However, upon reflection, whilst it certainly wasn't the best of performances by Dale, it was at least a performance that saw us create plenty of chances, and

Don't get me wrong, this is no CJ style propaganda run where we start bemoaning our luck or claiming it was only freak events conspiring against us which prevented us running up a cricket score. But its more a reflection of the standards that this side has set over the past few weeks, and when we don't quite hit those standards, we tend to become our own biggest critic.

We found ourselves up against from pretty much the start of the game, with the home side taking the lead within the opening three minutes of the game. They'd made their move down the right before cutting it back to former Shrewsbury striker Richard Walker. His effort took a nasty deflection off Nathan Stanton before settling in the far corner to give the Brewers the advantage.

From that point on, the game consisted of Dale having most of the possession against a hard working home side who seemed pretty content for us to have that, and then try and pick us off on the break.

Our chances weren't the most clear cut but they were certainly enough to keep the Albion supporters on edge. Will Buckley had our first real effort when he managed to get past former loanee Guy Branston before shooting from a tight angle.

We were starting to get a real grip on the game, and Chris O'Grady nearly came up with a goal that would have had fans talking about it long into the night. Somehow, he managed to control the ball, beat his marker and make space for himself all in one turn, but his low drive was turned wide of the post by the home keeper.

Albion looked to have plenty about them, and they were certainly winning the midfield battle, and striker Greg Pearson looked to be a very tricky opponent who had us on our toes all afternoon.

Half time saw us carry on where we left off in the first half but it was the Brewers who had the first real chance of the second half, and it was only a fantastic double save from Kenny Arthur which kept us in the game.

It was a passage of play which almost saw both sides score within the space of about 20 seconds. Arthur's original save from Pearson was a good one, but he made himself look massive to block the follow up from Richard Walker.

We went straight up the other end with Simon Whaley going on the sort of run that saw him elevated to the Championship. But unfortunately, his effort narrowly went wide of the post.

By now it was end to end stuff, and you wouldn't have put any money on the game remaining with just the one goal to show for it. Both sides looked dangerous, but the defences were just about holding out.

Whaley had another fine run, and whilst stuck in two minds, he chose to knock the ball back to O'Grady but the Oldham man couldn't quite got on the end of it.

We kept fighting away deep into injury time. Our first corner saw Kenny Arthur told to stay back by the management, and in the chaos following the corner, Dale fans were howling for a penalty as the ball appeared to catch the hand of a home defender as they desperately tried to clear the danger.

A second corner in the final seconds saw Arthur's pleas to go forward unnoticed, and it was left with a Scott Spencer header as our final chance of the game but it remained a disappointing finish to what was an entertaining game.

The PA announced Branston as man of the match, prompting applause on all sides of the ground with a rather bizarre concept of applauding a former player rather than trying to climb onto the pitch to lynch him. Not sure that will ever catch on.

So the winning run came to an end, and as I said, whilst it wasn't the best of performances, it wasn't quite the damp squib that some had it down as being. Chances came and went, and another game will see us create less yet come away as comfortable winners.
