When it comes to someone like Mawson, I would be more active in trying to keep him than some like Siggy as much as I love the guy.
Mawson is our future and someone we can build a side around. The spine of the team is critical and he will be a top talent over the next few years.

However he is very young and has potential to improve, having already shown he is capable of good, consistent performances when he cuts out the ridiculous risks he likes to take, as well as when he has an actual defensive midfielder in front of him, instead of what ever Cork plays when hes on the pitch. |

Has made mistakes but so has Stones. I think Stones is so over rated it is untrue.
Would like to have seen Stones playing in the same situation as Mawson has this season, against relegation for an unfashionable team.
I had reservations when we signed Mawson but we have a gem in this lad. |
Every time I see Stones he seems to make a critical error. Mawson's got more of the physical 'defend first' attitude imo. He's grown this season, so it would be nice to keep him for next now that he's settling in.

So because someone has the opinion that Federico Fernandez and John Stones are better defenders than Alfie Mawson, who has made many mistakes this season, they are trolling?
No wonder this forum is dying. I was accused of trolling about 4 years ago when I was criticising how Jenkins was running the club. When I commented after the Napoli games that Monk was immediately trying to change the way we play. There are other examples too.

Mawson did improve second half of the season and good to see a defender chip in with some goals which Williams didn't really have in his locker, especially towards the latter years. I agree though its potential, we conceded a ridiculous amount of goals this season and Mawson did make a lot of mistakes which was a main factor of us having a very poor defensive record. His concentration and positioning is something he needs to work on and I believe if we keep hold of him he could be a fantastic player but don't hype him up and say about him being captain next season and all the other crap. Comparing him to Stones is a bit daft too, Stones is far from the finished product and was not worth the price tag but he is a better player than Mawson by quite some distance. |  |

Difficult to compare the two when you consider Stones had the likes of Jagielka, Coleman, Baines around him whereas Alfie had the like of Tayls, Kyle N and VDH around him at times.
Alfie has proved himself in the difficult situation we encountered this season and is improving rapidly. Who knows how the error-ridden Stones would have reacted in such a situation.

Our defence was poor because is was being organised and coached by Bob Bradley and Tony Roberts. It is no longer poor because it is no longer being coached and organised by Bob Bradley and Tony Roberts.

I think it was the Watford game, he did it 5 or 6 times, then got caught, they scored and we lost 1-0. Looked like a defeat that could relegate us at the time. To his and Clements total credit, he immediately cut down on it and worked on less risky ways of getting out of danger. I think that kind of thing will put top teams like Spurs off. I'd say he is at least a season away from being seriously considered by teams at that level. | | | |

I have never said anything along the lines of Alfie being a "finished article". Not even close. I have stated that he gets caught out of position at times and has a tendency to over-elaborate on the ball, resulting in panicked situations for us.
But he also has a lot of the natural ability, raw physicality, and feel for the game that we have been missing in our defence. He has good ball control and can pick a diagonal pass, even under pressure. Those are rare skills for CBs, and why they are expensive commodities. And, of course, he's only 23 with plenty of room to develop into an even better player, hopefully with us.
Alfie only gets compared to Stones because they are ball-playing defenders from Barnsley. And I think the main sentiment on here is that Alfie for £5m is preferable to Stones for £50m. I'd agree with that. They are closer in ability than the fees are, certainly.

To be fair to him I think it was only 3 or 4 times, but it was Watford and it wasn't the first time Alfie had made those mistakes. It was a learning experience and the rest of the season proved that. Maybe he'll make mistakes now and then, but I doubt he'll be as brazen about them anymore and I'm sure he's heard an earful about the right time, right place.
I hope big clubs focus on the minor details, though, such as this and we can hold onto him for a few more seasons. He's got a bright future and we should focus on the big picture with him. | | | |

If you get a centre back who keeps tricking the striker that often, he may look like a dick, but the striker actually loves it because he knows he is going to steal the ball away at some point and when he does, there is a good chance he will be through on goal. To his credit, subsequent games showed Mawson had learned from his mistake. I think that sort of thing will still be a concern to the clubs willing to spend big bucks though. | | | |
