There is a good reason...its called tradition. Its called patriotism. Many went to war and died over the years for Queen / King and country. Many, like myself, value the monarchs and love having them as ambassadors for this country.
I am genuinely proud of the traditions we have...state opening, trooping of the colours, changing of the guard, etc. Nobody does it as well as we do.

I think that they're all valid points, to be fair. I also think that every Nation should have somebody outside of and seperate from Parliament with powers to regulate Parliament. I just think that that person should be elected by and answerable to the citizens of that Nation, and anything else leaves me bemused and scratching my head.
We agree on the post the only difference is I am happy with it being ceremonial and you would like an elected post. Of course an elected head of state answers many questions but I believe poses many more but maybe that is a discussion for a different thread

If those on welfare all contributed 10 hours a week, we could cut the palace maintenance costs down substantially. Any spare hours can be donated to charities, care homes and public services upkeep. What a wonderful world we have then.

No idea what you do for a living, but not sure making lots of money is always an indicator of success or in most cases particularly useful.

You are only where you are because of help from others, be it an educator, be it an employer, be it your customers. I think it selfish to deny that same opportunity in the form of welfare to others, iPhone or not.

Putting to one side the nature of the Sovereign Grant and the Crown Estate (neither of which are 'public funds') or the new constitution that would have to be written, whether you are pro or anti-monarchy, scrapping it wouldn't actually save any money as we would still require a head of state. The newly elected President Blair would simply move into Buck House, the Royal Household would became the Presidential Household and the Windsors would decamp to Sandringham and Balmoral and still be as rich as creases.
France has a similarly sized population and economy but a republican government and elected president that costs over £100 million a year to maintain plus another £10 million to keep the ex-presidents ticking over.

Fair enough, Gloucs. I just can't see it myself. I think it's lunacy for a Nation to allow itself to be ruled by an unelected person, and more so if that person is picked due to some weird notion of having royal blood.

There hasn't been an absolute monarch since the 17th Century, so Betty doesn't actually rule. if she did try to pull a constitutional fast one the government wouldn't take a blind bit of notice. The Monarch is a figurehead, rather like the McCarthy Mor, who would bring in tourist money to Ireland, 'cept he lives in Morocco.
The Queen is not simply a 'figurehead' and her role and power, and that of other royals, is far more than 'ceremonial'. Recent acts of parliament have attempted to make it harder to find out about this, but following freedom of information requests and a court order over 5 years ago, a measure of the 'royals' true power was revealed.
"The extent of the Queen and Prince Charles's secretive power of veto over new laws has been exposed after Downing Street lost its battle to keep information about its application secret."
"This is opening the eyes of those who believe the Queen only has a ceremonial role," said Andrew George, Liberal Democrat MP for St Ives, which includes land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, the Prince of Wales' hereditary estate.
"It shows the royals are playing an active role in the democratic process and we need greater transparency in parliament so we can be fully appraised of whether these powers of influence and veto are really appropriate. At any stage this issue could come up and surprise us and we could find parliament is less powerful than we thought it was."
