Was shocked to hear Newcastle are cat 3 and Sunderland still cat 1🤷🏼‍♂️

And yet, Freddie Woodman, 22 is way way more ready for Championship football than Steve Benda. Makes you wonder.

As you know it’s down to legals with Sala, if your lawyers told you not to buy a house, you probably wouldn’t. Also, most clubs buy a few duffs, didn’t you blow 80 odd million in your last PL season?

Marvelous swerving of my questions there.

You know I can’t answer that question though, you just like being cantankerous by asking it.
Thought you’d be more concerned about losing all that academy you invested in?

While saying there were no plan to alter category status for this season (April 2020) Birch explained that, in terms of coaching and quality of games, there was little difference between Cat 2 & 3 but. huge difference in costs.
If you are only looking at local players and players over the ge of 16 (maybe 18) Cat 1 is a bit of a luxury. If you want bring in the better players from a wider area (and internationally) or get the better under 12s Cat 1 is needed otherwise there would be little difference in the quality of coaching.

We can only afford what a mid championship team can afford.

This is why Newport, Yeovil, Exeter do not have Cat 1 - they cant afford it.

Thats the bottom line.

Beware of the Risen People

Cooper said we only went for Woodman after Benda got injured. Both have played well at the level of football offered them this season.

As was pointed out - neither does Newcastle.
IMO I'd be doing everything possible to keep Cat1 status ... but we could't affair. large enough number to sustain taking out so many for the first team and young players will expect to be playing at a higher level than our current under 23s.

Yes but pinching good young talent from other clubs is where we have been successful, this would put us at a massive disadvantage, if this happens with all the players we will lose next season, we really are in the shit!

At the forum in Taibach tonight, Birch denied there were any plans to down grade the academy "at this time".

Why can't you answer the questions?

I'm very concerned about losing the academy but it's not confirmed yet, so I won't let it keep me awake. I was just taking an interest in your claims seeing as you brought them up. Bit pointless saying something on a football forum if you don't want others to comment or query what was said

According to wiki, his old man was keeper coach at Newcastle when he joined them as a 14/15 yr old, so might have a lot to do with his particular case.

League status will be important too. Lower Cat academies have a restricted area they can scout from don’t they? We’ve done alright locally in the past, so hopefully we will in the future. It’ll mean the end of raiding other clubs for young players, but we can’t afford them anyway now. Best thing for us is to pick up older PL rejects on a free or notional fee, like we did with Leon. Loads of former top league development players have to drop down the league’s - the problem is spotting the ones who are good enough to get back to the top level.

It's ok, we can sign them 5 years down the line for £10m each with all the money we've saved.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

Freddie's father Andy was the goalkeeper for Northampton against us in that heart breaking 1997 play off final at Wembley.

Everyday above ground ... Is a good day! 😎

He was 16 I think. Went out on his first loan within a year. Benda was nearly 19 when he came here. Neither the perfect example of an academy product from their club.

Cat 1 clubs get unrestricted national recruitment from u12s level (as long as they provide full-time education in-house). Lower categories have to stay within travel time limits until u17s. Recruiting first year scholars for the u18s as we have been doing wouldn't change if we dropped to Cat 3 afaik.
