Let’s talk about the defence under Potter 17:11 - Apr 19 with 5334 viewsBrad_Bobbly

Awful awful awful

Schoolboy stuff and has been all season under Harry Potter

From beating the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool every week at the Liberty

To letting in 5 goals in two games v the mighty Rotherham

We’re going nowhere under this manager and owners

Our organisation at defending corners worries me, we have conceded too many soft gaols that-have cost us a good shout at the playoffs as a result... Forest away was the last straw for me, 3 points turned into 0 with the long blink of a clueless defenders eye...
Stopping crosses has to be worked on, Roberts particularly soft in that area I find... i do worry the team approach to attacking football is not matched by the team approach to defending a lead, early in the season we had one of the best defensive records in the league - so what’s happened?
A fit on fire Mulder was surprisingly dropped and our confidence in the no1 position has crumbled ever since.
We are now a team totally reliant on scoring at least 2 gaols a game to pick up points as the opposition will easily score at least one or two..
This has to be a priority in the remaining games and during the summer...

Poll: Priority for new manager?

In fairness to Potter, he has not had much of a budget to sort the defense out, plus we have the smallest outfield players in the league.

But the defence under Potter does need attention I agree. He does also, as he has mentioned it specifically in the press.
THey are working on the set pieces and simple/schoolboy errors, but how and why are we so poor at defending?
*People blaming Potter...is it his tactics? Is it the marking system?
*People blaming the players...is it a height issue? Is it a poor calibre of players?
*Anyone blaming the fans?

I really don't know what it is to be honest, but I don't blame Potter. I don't blame anyone tbh. It's a group effort and a team game. We need to work on it together and as a team and an honest group.

No team is perfect.
We play some lovely football. We have worked on our early season low scoring ability. We are having loads of possession. We are improving all the time.
We have 2 problems which are being made out to be a disaster. Actually, if we fix those two problems (goalie and stupid mistakes in defence) we would probably be going up this year with a team of kids and early season "no-hopers".

Iron out those issues and we will be a force to be reckoned with. That's without any investment.
We are a very good team, with a very big on field issue. Nothing that can't be sorted though.

No leadership. VDH should be a commanding presence but he’s not. Wouldn’t mind seeing a good dominant CB here next year, maybe as captain

Each time I go to Bedd - au........................

Nordfeldt , a good footballing keeper/shot stopper, but suffers from keeper agoraphobia..... ie away from his line.

Another Ash type needed alongside VDH , or whoever his replacement will be.

Need someone taller and a lot better at heading the ball than Ash.

Get Joe back in the side.

In all my years watching the swans I’d struggle to believe that we’ve ever been worse at defending balls in to the six yard box than we are this season. We don’t win a single header and the opposition score with extrodinary regularity so it’s hard to see what there is to defend about it.

We do win headers in the box and in the 6 yard box..

Personally I was never entirely convinced by Ash's shouting and moaning and pulling his shirt over his head after mistakes style of leadership. Loud is not synonymous with effective, and with a young team that can be a bit fragile it can sometimes do as much harm as good. We've got a few (Roberts, McBurnie) that lose their heads a bit too often as it is.

Makes for good theatre, though.

Having rewatched the first half:

- First goal is a combination of Fulton not knowing what's behind him and CCV not tracking his man/men across.
- Second goal McBurnie jumps into vdH as he wins his clearing header.
- We won the first ball on every long throw.
- They had one corner early on and it looked like we went largely man to man. Fulton was definitely given that duty, moving out to block their huddle. Camera angle isn't great for showing it.
- A good goalkeeper doesn't need to make that reaction save Nordfeldt makes because they come out and claim floated crosses into the six yard box.

That’s alright then, no problem.
