Sad news.
Classy footballer in his time although past his best with us.
Went onto become landlord of the Royal Oak in Littleborough.
His managerial skills seem to have been poor though judging from Mark Hodkinson’s recent book.

For all his managerial shortcomings, he will always be remembered by those of us old enough to recall the dark days of the mid 70s.One vivid memory I have, during a 5 0 defeat defeat at Hartlepool and after he dished out a very "meaty" challenge on a home player, he responded to the Pool fans who were clamouring for him to be sent off by standing and facing the main stand and conducted the chorus of boos and abuse as if he were conducting an orchestra!

He holds the record for scoring the last goal the old Accrington Stanley team scored in League Football.
I saw him play on the right wing a few times in the 1960's when he was in his prime. On his day he was unstoppable. Old time Villa fans still talk about a goal he scored for Blackburn Rovers at Villa Park. He picked ball up on the half way line and waltzed around most of the Villa team before slotting into the corner. They reckon it's the best goal ever scored at Villa Park.
He was well past his best at the Dale.

Yes, his time in charge was truly awful as were his signings, but he was operating under very difficult conditions.
Possibly wasn’t cut out to be a manager because he was a very gritty and committed player.
I remember that Hartlepool loss, one of the worst games I have ever seen us play though my assessment probably coloured by being as sick as a dog that day and sat in freezing winds and driving rain.

Sad news, Mike was our captain in the 70s and although at the end of his career was a class act, great vision and a set piece specialist, famous for his free kicks which he always found Bob Mountfords head! Tony Whelan, Keith Harvey, Paul Hallows, Mick Poole in goal to name but a few were in that side. Mike still watched dale in the 80s, of course he wasn’t a great manager but those were desparate times.He was a great guy, and although a different era was probably one of our finest midfielders and played in the old div 1. Remembering him having to get involved at Torquay when our captain Tony (can’t remember his second name) was trying to sell us the complimentary tickets we used get every away match. Birchy the supporters club chairman at the time was not amused😆
Poor days on the field but plenty of fun away days.

Tony Morrin?
Not sure whether he was captain.
The first four seasons in Div 4 after relegation we lost every game at Torquay and didnt even score. I was one of a handful of fans who were at every one of those games. There really should have been a medal struck for them.
His ethical behaviour regarding complimentary tickets was probably something he learned during his early days with a team no longer in the football league....do i need give you more clues? | | | |
