Pub Closures 20:05 - Aug 7 with 10056 viewsBazzaInTheLoft

Closure of Princess Vic and Adelaide caused carnage in Conningham and The Green today.

Can any recommend any boozers locally that you don’t have take a catheter with you to get pint?

Greene King have owned the Adelaide since 2013 when they acquired it along with 13 other pubs from Realpubs.

I suspect Greene King will reopen the Adelaide following a refurb as they’ve not sold any pubs in London since being purchased by the wealthiest family in Hong Kong a few years ago.

I respectfully disagree. Greene King were a property portfolio that sold beer as a sideline prior to being acquired by an actual property developer (CK Asset Holdings). They bought and flipped the Goldsmiths Arms in East Acton, trebling their investment in the space of 5 years.

This is what will replace it

I've spoken to enough GK managers to be very concerned about the future of any GK pub located in a commercially attractive residential property development area (e.g. London).

It's an absolute shocker. I used to drink in the Cowshed, it had it's edges but it was the last of the community pubs in the area (I'll let anyone else who drank in their do the "care in the..." jokes.

Goldsmith Arms was sold by GK to a London based property developer in September 2017.

Hong Kong based CK Partners acquired GK in late 2019.

The two are completely unconnected and my point stands that GK have not sold any pubs in London since the takeover.

I'm sure this has been dicussed before, but just because a pub is near a football ground does not make it an attractive business proposition. Only 23 guaranteed home games per season, falling to 19 guaranteed home games should that club get promoted to the Prem. And for each of those you'll need to hire extra bar staff and possibly security staff.

The best solution would be for QPR to get its act together and take over the running of the existing bars inside the ground (from the useless outsourced private firms), hire the large number of requisite staff on match days, and shovel out thousands of pints of beer and hot dogs / burgers for an hour before kick-off and for 15 minutes at half-time, using a logical queuing system, like they manage to do at every German ground I have visited, and even at Wembley. It'll never happen though - the club just doesn't seem to want to take our money.

duke of clarence, mailcoach, and odonagues.
all good pubs on match days as well.

The Mail coach, was that at the far end of the Bush where the station is now? I used to work in an office in the old British exhibition building right next door to the mail coach and spent many great drunken nights there

Crikey, thinking about the mail coach it was back in1990 watched a lot of the world Cup in there. Especially remember the Ireland v Romania game where O'Leary scored the winning penalty and the place went mental. Was that really 31 years ago

That makes sense.

Many years ago I used to walk back from work in Acton to the football to stretch my legs and I stopped in there with a a colleague once and it was full of Methadone users.

Always a wondered if it was still open.

I love threads about pubs - it was my wife that drove me to drink.
I'll always be indebted to her.

Yes ...I don't remember the name Admiral Blake. Supposedly taking the money on the door of the Windsor Castle, myself, Joseph and Clifford, would often piss off on quiet nights to other local venues..it was always the Cowshed to us. Circa 78/79.

The Percy (now Portobello House)

Yeah that was it, the Earl Percy.
Named after Blackadder's mate.

Was the landlord John from the Percy? Ginger, a tad overweight (being kind) used to help out at Cardinal Manning scouts.

I always though he was the landlord but after 30 years cannot remember.
