From Kieran Maguire on X:

Stockport County lost over £7 million in 23/24. Losses were underwritten by owner Mark Stott putting in £11m in the form of new shares. County spent over £640k on player signings. Total losses over the years now exceed £21 million.

Shows how difficult it is to be competitive and sustainable in the lower leagues. County have increased ticket prices and are still selling out regularly and still so far away from being sustainable.

Tangled up in blue.

Can’t quite recall where I’ve read that before.

Too true. Of all the local clubs - you'd think Stockport would be cautious about their financial sustainability following the fall and fall of their club after they had financially cheated to get promotion after our wembley play offs.

But then if you don't own the club, there isn't a lot you can do.

To be fair to the Stockport chairman, he's a local lad whose property development business does actually develop properties, rather than a fantasist chancer from out of town, many of whose properties didn't get off the backs of the fag packets they were designed on, as seen at a certain other nearby club...

What was the Bolton bloke called who suddenly decided to stop throwing his money at them?

Didn’t stop them from nearly going pop.

Fleetwood Town’s latest accounts (for 2023/2024) show a loss of £9.3 million.
Total losses are over £40 million but this is explained as being covered by a “parent loan”.

DIdn't the owner miraculously pass the full voting rights to his son as soon as he was jailed for fraud? And his son miraculously passed the EFL Owners and Directors test. What could possibly go wrong here?

Meanwhile Leicester City, who have previously gone bust twice before I think, and successfully argued they couldn't be challenged by the Premier League for breaching the PSR finance rules as they had fallen back into the EFL last season, have announced they lost a further £19m last season - although that was down from almost £100m the year before. Player sales was the reason for fall in losses - as we all know that isn't a sustainable position. But eh they will get away with it as they managed a yo-yo promo back to the Premiership.

Hurry along with the football regulator please

Bolton are surely going that way again, having survived so very narrowly in 2019. Absolutely burning through money and seemingly unable to cover the loan that kept them going 6 years ago.

You'd have to think Stockport are in a similar boat to how Bolton were when Eddie Davies was putting the money in - fine as long as the bloke keeps doing it. But when he gets bored or his family need the money back the club has an unsupportable liability that any prospective new owner will find very unattractive.

And they still haven't put a roof on the away end.

And even the most well intentioned backer gets bored eventually - Lim did at Salford, who now have spiralling debts, and of course there is a patch of scrub land that used to be Nene Park which tells of what happened when Max Griggs had enough of paying for Rushden and Diamonds.

Colchester’s latest published figures show a loss for the season of £3.7 million making accumulated losses of £42 million.
All covered in the accounts by a “loan” from the owner of £37 million.
Crazy.

Forest Green Rovers have announced that they made an Operating loss of £3.2m for the financial year ending June 2024 - the season they were relegated to the National League. But what has surprised me is they claim a turnover of £7.9m with gates that are slightly less than ours. We never got to £7m even in League One and good cup runs/players sales etc. But to make a loss of £3.2m when your turnover was £7.9m is stageering for what was a league two club. Of course they are backed by a weathly owner.

Of course, we now have a wealthy owner, so I presume the Ogdens are donating money rather than loaning it. If we are criticising other clubs then we need to be clear how our finances are different to them.
