A club that faced closure just 3 years ago, still spent £5.1m last season and forecast to spend £4.6m this past season. Overheads are £1.8m and so the playing budget is £2.7m for the season just ending. Significantly more than Dale have spent. They plan to lose almost £2.5m this year. So with a playing budget in the top 3 for National League, and with the biggest crowds, they have indeed underachieved again. So not surprised the management team have been sacked. Can’t have that. This is a club that Maher has managed through chaos ever since he took over the reigns. The club were the subject of 19 winding up orders while he was there. He and the players frequently went without pay. One time for three whole months. Players left the club citing breach of contract as the reason. There was no running water at the training ground, because of unpaid bills. These are the very reasons the support increased, out of determination not to let the club be slaughtered by the previous regime. Ring any bells?
They often only had two subs on the bench, including a keeper, because they were almost continually under transfer embargoes.When the new consortium to over they had no choice but to invest most of the funds in the club’s infrastructure rather than the team. So the marquee signing after the change of ownership was Spasov from Slough Town, (no Regan Linney type) who ended up being a bit part player. If the club seriously set objectives higher than reaching the play offs and winning a trophy at Wembley they need to give their heads a wobble.
Now Dale and them are in different leagues I was going to pop along occasionally next season, but they can stuff that. Have never liked management using there workers as scapegoats.
Maher is solid and will pick up work soon enough. Although he will feel like he’s been kicked in the teeth right now, he should be able to look back with pride at what he achieved at Southend. It was remarkable in the circumstances. | | | |

Well said sir! Apart from a walk down the pier and fish and chips never looked forward to going to Southend. We must have been going for 30 years and the location for away fans is the same awful corner as ever with no improvements in all that time. Braintree and Eastleigh were much better, which is saying something! [Post edited 21 May 7:56]

I respect the view given the commitment he and staff made 3 years ago. But he has been backed by new owners with sizeable budgets and he hasn't delivered what that budget was supposed to bring. We have all been around long enough to know that this is a results game. We have sacked managers in recent times with budgets a third of that of Southend and those managers had to deal with a club downsizing in every department too. | | | |

We have all been around long enough to know that this is a results game. We have sacked managers in recent times with budgets a third of that of Southend and those managers had to deal with a club downsizing in every department too. |
They are no longer the club that could attract players from a higher division by throwing the cheque book at them. If you look at the pond Maher has had to fish in to find players the quality just is not there. Harry Taylor and Gus Scott Morrison are the only players they have that could potentially find a place in the Rochdale side.
It will be interesting to see the how the season ticket sales go this summer. Locally some are grudgingly accepting he should go, others are disgusted by the decision. Very few are delighted.
Moving to having a Recruitment Manager and a Director of Football is a set up plenty of managers would find difficulty in dovetailing with. My guess is if it ain’t Hinshelwood then Southend will go for a young inexperienced manger they can mould into the new set up.
Interesting times on the Essex coast. I wonder how much budget the Recruitment Manager will get. At this stage I just don’t fancy them to get as many points next season.
