I believed he was England’s best keeper at the time, but obviously there was split opinions, with the other great keeper at the time Peter Shilton. England were very lucky to have such world class quality keepers to choose from. A fantastic long career at the very top of English football as a player then coach.

Got his chance when Shilts dropped a clanger in the Wembley WC qualifier against Poland which we had to win to qualify for West Germany (seems odd saying that now) World Cup of 1974 Think he held the number one spot for a few years after that. Was it Clem that let the ball go under him at Hamden Park for Dalglish to score a few years later ? My memories a bit vague these days 😆

Didn't Joe Corrigan only get maybe one or two caps because he couldn't get past both Clemence and Shilton?
Ray Clemence R.I.P. on 14:04 - Nov 17 with 656 views | EllDale | Before them was Gordon Banks who was another automatic selection. There were others as well such as Jim Montgomery, Peter Bonetti, Gordon West and Alex Stepney who may well have walked into the current England team.
