Yes, it's basically impossible for pubs with the taxes, energy and staff costs. More will close. It's even worse for businesses that have to compete internationally because e.g. our industrial electricity prices are about double what businesses in the EU or US pay. You can't compete on that basis.
It's also true that youngsters don't go to the pub in the way that previous generations did, but you have to ask why is this happening? Inevitably the cost of a pint is a big factor. Older people carry on because it's what they've always done, but younger people look at it and think there are better ways of spending money. |

How can he be "the worst centre forward" when - after RM left and he was given a chance - he became the clear first choice at centre forward in preference to the likes of Arma and Archer? If they were better centre forwards then why didn't they show it on the pitch or in training?
Arma did well for Saints overall, but as a centre forward he did not. As a centre forward he was mostly terrible, and in the view of 2 successive managers, he was worse than Tall Paul in that role. Also, he was only ever any good in the Championship, which is a big step down in quality to the PL, where Tall Paul played. If Tall Paul had played in the Championship he'd have got bucket loads of goals. As for Archer...
Clearly Tall Paul was a better centre forward than either of them. |

Neither Downs nor BBD are centre forwards. They're utility strikers (call them inside forwards if you prefer) that we've played in the middle, sometimes because we didn't have any centre forwards available.
Downs needs space, not the attentions of a centre back. He also said that the weakest part of his game was heading, which doesn't sound like a centre forward to me.
BBD has always played best on the left, which is where he played well for Derby last season. |

Yeah I agree it would be crazy, but that doesn't mean it won't happen.
Personally I think there's a decent chance that common sense will prevail, but as I said above I'm concerned about the "bullying" aspect. |

Not sure who's said what, but I have read that Will Salt is now in a permanent analyst role at SFC. Let no one say we've given him a permanent job to stop him talking!
It sounds like a lot of the firm evidence of what was said is in whatsapp messages. A lot might depend on whether any of those messages incriminate Tonda himself, or whether they're just second hand reports of what Tonda said and what he demanded from the analyst team. The FA won't like the way Salt was treated, but Tonda might be saved by the fact that he wasn't Salt's boss, so maybe didn't directly tell him what to do. |

Anything could happen, but I think the FA will take into account the EFL punishment.
When they ruled on Bielsa, they said: "The FA worked closely with the EFL during the investigation into Leeds United FC observing opponent training sessions, and The FA notes the League's decision to charge Leeds for a breach of its Competition Rules."
That suggests that, in that case, they regarded the 2 disciplinary processes as linked and took into account the EFL decision. No reason to think they'll do it differently in our case.
But, one thing I think is being missed is that this is not all about the offence of spying. It will also address the treatment of Will Salt and the "bullying" involved in making a powerless intern do something he correctly said was wrong to do. In these woke times, I think it's unlikely that the FA will just let that pass, especially as it seems that Saints have not sought to punish Tonda for his actions (which I think was a mistake, for this reason). |

We'll almost certainly make the play offs, but that's not the point really. Making the play offs is useless if you don't win - and that's going to be a struggle. At the moment I wouldn't rate our chances if any of our key players were injured or suspended at that time. Edozie on for Leo sums up where we are at the moment. |

Comments and jokes about spying aren't exactly a surprise and should be water off our backs by now. We'll see who has the last laugh in May next year. He who laughs last, laughs longest. |

The reason we do it is supposedly to avoid what happened at Lincoln where we hoofed the ball up field and it kept coming back. I get that, but I'm still not convinced and I think for a lot of Saints fans, the experience of watching the Russ M team take this tactic to stupid extremes, has made us more nervous of it than other fan bases would be. That's why it gets booed.
For me, I don't think we've got the platers to do this well. Peretz, Wood and Kev are never far from a mistake when they're playing tippy tappy. But at least with Tonda, it isn't a matter of religion. So long as we still hoof the ball when we need to then I can live with it. |

I agree with that. In the old days it was 4-4-2 with a second striker (inside forward). These days when teams play with a second striker it tends to be a hybrid striker/winger role in a 4-3-3, or hybrid striker/10 role.
But I can't see that Downs, Mara or Arma were ever centre forwards in anything but name. They just weren't suited to the role because they didn't have the physicality needed to play up against centre backs and hold the ball up. It was a mistake we kept making over and over, trying to play someone who wasn't a natural centre forward as a no. 9. Over the years, we've always played best with a natural centre forward. Finally, we seemed to have figured that out last year.
I just hope that Mabuma develops into a centre forward too because so far he's looked more like an inside forward too. But the way he made the Azaz goal on Saturday was absolutely classic centre forward play, so hopefully we'll see more of that from him and he can share the load with Larin. |

Doing that would just be unbelievably stupid. I'd hope that Tonda and the club have learned their lesson. If it's a ban from any involvement with the club for a period of time, then that would be harsh and we should challenge, but if we lose any challenges then we should follow the ruling to the letter. It doesn't matter whether we think they can find out or not. We didn't think they could find out about the spying and look where that got us.
We shouldn't cheat again and if we do then he and the club should expect to have the rule book really and truly thrown at them. |

I suspect it's 24 because we only have 24. Who else could go in? That's everyone including the 4 keepers. U21s don't need to be included.
I'd love to have another centre forward but an out of contract signing seems very unlikely to me. |

Once again we're seeing that we don't just need "strikers", we need centre forwards. Part of the problem with Mubama is that he's not a true centre forward. He struggles to hold the ball up and doesn't really help us in build up play.
We really, really needed to sign another centre forward in the window and that's the mistake that will hurt us the most this season. Realistically there's not much hope of change, other than coaching Mubama. I doubt that Princewill is going to help us much yet. Maybe we'll find another miracle in January like we did with Cyle. |

You've said a couple of times that Mubama is very similar to Larin, while Stewart was a different kind of option. I don't think so at all.
Larin and Stewart could be swapped in and out and we played exactly the same way with either of them. They had different styles, but they did the same job. They could both play as a target man that would link our build up play and get on the end of crosses. By instinct, they're both traditional centre forwards.
Mubama's different. His strengths are all about movement, finding space and running in behind, rather than being a focal point with his back to goal. To get the best out of him we'll either have to adapt to him or get him to adapt to us. Both can be done, but a bit of adapting is required.
On Ramsdale, reading between the lines it seems that Tonda has gave his word to Peretz that he would be signing as first choice. If he goes back on his word now then he destroys the relationship with Peretz. Even if Ramsdale stays, unless Peretz gets injured or plays consistently badly, Ramsdale will probably stay out of the picture. |

To get automatic promotion we had to strengthen. But we're actually a bit weaker, not stronger, so for me automatic promotion is unlikely now. Most likely we'll be in the play offs.
How we do will depend a lot on injuries and workload. If we have our key players regularly performing at their best, then we're fine. The problems start when they're unavailable or tired. I thought we saw some of that last night. Last season Larin would have been rotated out for Stewart to start this game. That kept them both looking fresh.
So not a disastrous window, but not what we really needed in such a critical season. If we don't get promotion this year we lose the parachute payments and the squad will get worse again. Hopefully we will get automatic promotion, but I suspect it'll be the lottery of the play offs again. |
