Valiant Hearts and To be a Pilgrim( from which are the lines quoted here) are two different hymns. The latter which is about striving against difficulties and has no military connections is still sung in churches. It is my favourite hymn as well as my Old School’s song . |

Social class has nothing to do with it. I’m sure the Hooray Henryrugger boys would find this as hilarious as their equally offensive songs. The trouble with this song is it offensive without any wit, or context to make it acceptable.
I doubt Cirkin likes it. Imagine his family asking “what song do they sing about you?

The best song in recent years imo was the adaptation of Last Christmas. Funny, topical

I thought we played well given Charlton’s poor attitude. They were very effective with their low block, but for a team at home who could have gone top if they won, they let their fans down. No interest in winning and some time-wasting.
I got excited by a 4 4 2 team , but then frustrated that we played Lloyd wide on the right and Burrellon his own. Lloyd should have been used to help Burrell and two fast attackers in the centre would have been more of a challenge. Lloyd is not a winger.
Ronnie had an excellent game. The guy behind me calling him a c**t for his last minute shot clearly had no sense of proportion or gratitude. Lamptey, Kamara and Cirkin all impressed me. Mbengue should have been used earlier as he created 3 good chances once he was on. Against opposition playing so deep , his defensive frailty wouldn’t have mattered as much.
Jimmy shouldn’t have started the second half after limping off at HT. Hopefully it is a minor niggle.
We played some nice football. We struggled to provide a threat in the box. We are 4th with 11 points. If we beat PNE we will have 14 from the first 8 games. Good enough for me. |

Listening to the JS post-match interview suggested that he picks the team and formation , but must follow the fitness team on how long he is allowed to play any individual player or if someone has to be rested. |

Downvoted accidentally. I agree with all this. It isn’t a woke thing at all. It is marketing people who don’t have a feel for the soul of our club.
If the suggestion that we will run out to Silver Lining is true that would really bother me a lot more than some stupid made up anthem. We have run out to a lot of different tones over the years , but Silver Lining when we win at him is special because it is only played then. If this really happens it is down to some idiot hearing sung at full blast on Wednesday and not realising why it is a special celebration for fans not used to winning all the time .
If I have got it wrong about the moving to the run out , then I will be delighted to look daft. |

Apart from the last 15 minutes or so, it wasn’t a hard watch . It was a fast exciting game when at times we looked as if we could run away with it. Vale was the only poor player imo. Charles distribution was not his best, but still better than Nardi or Walsh. He did some decent catches off his line.
The rest were a joy to watch for 70 minutes. In previous seasons we would have conceded an equaliser and even lost. The atmosphere did drop , but picked up for the final few minutes. [Post edited 2 Sep 23:11]

Thank you for doing this and the final update . A really informative and interesting post.
It appears to have been an excellent window. Trimming out deadwood or previously decent players being replaced by upgrades.
The youngsters have got loans to improve and toughen up with a number going to clubs only one tier down.
A lot has been said elsewhere about the signings, so just an overview opinion. We have bought in all the key areas fans said needed improvement.
Unless we suffer from our previous excess of injuries or complete collapses in confidence, the season ahead looks very promising. |

If you are only commenting on the Blackburn tickets, that usually is down to the home club making them available. |

Agree about JCS. Watching him and Ronnie exchange confident passes and moving the ball forward out of defence was a pleasure. Having JD alongside allows them the opportunity. There may be tougher games, but it was great to be there to watch it happen as it should. |
