The difference is that a Pep team can all pass and so it can pay dividends to play ticker-tacker until the cows come home.

At best it pays off once, maybe twice, per match for us so we need to shoot on sight.

He isn't up to the lone striker role in any way, shape or form. Which is worrying because Marti will stick with it. Not sure what we are going to do with him, if I'm being honest.

I can understand the line-up and the idea. Its not that we have 22 quality players that we can switch in and out. We currently have a decent, fit-for-purpose 14 or 15 and it is important that we put our best 11 out in the League. If I was Marti I would have done pretty much the same.

I agree. I don't know what he has seen in Celar. Madsen too, yet to see him take things by the scruff of the neck. Quite worrying signs. But half of the new players are returning on the investment so I suppose that's not too bad.

The town hall/police are pretty thorough but they don't quite go about the problem effectively enough. They somehow need to become a bit more international and to celebrate the different nationalities more. That said, there are a hell of a lot of chancers in the city because it's got a good climate, it's by the sea and things are pretty well organised in Spain. You've just got to take the rough with the smooth. There are a hell of a lot of people in this world who haven't got a roof to call their own over their heads. It just so happens that quite a few gravitate to Barcelona because they think the grass is greener there and conditions are better for them. People with a lot lot less than you or I. Needing to get by. Theft happens.

Lived in Barcelona for 4 months last summer (and melted in the heat for two of those).

I would say to visit the centre early in the day when the streets are less busy and try not to eat out or drink there. You will not eat well in the centre and it will not be a pleasant experience. As you are going for a big occasion go down to the Maremagnum where you will find a better quality restaurant or go 2 stops on the yellow line along the beach to Villa Olimpica Ciutadella where there are also fish restaurants around a (now overdeveloped) marina.

Better still, go to one of the two nearest towns (Badalona - north) and Casteldfells Mar (south), both about 40 minutes by metro or train. It will take a little bit of planning and effort but you'll be able to relax and stroll out there and you will eat in an authentic place with authentic Spanish (Catalan) food and wine served by Spanish (Catalan) staff.

So sorry for your loss and I hope the forthcoming days are not too difficult. You sound like you were a wonderful family member for him. RIP.

Prolific striker

The majority of those were probably 10 minute appearances though. I know he got caught off-side a lot but I thought he was a bit unlucky for us and looked more of a striker than Dykes when he came on at times.

Well if refusing to sign a contract if they are any good is going to become the norm then maybe its best that they are late developers.

When you get to the bottom of the barrel and you see that there is nothing there

Or when you look in the mirror upon waking up and see a gaunt, withered ghost looking back at you

Agreed on crumpets. They are versatile as an egg. Do the job morning, noon or night. Plus with marmite on (only marmite) I believe they are not too fatty so you can do them last thing at night without knowing that they are going to line your arteries. Crumpets with marmite on and tea; it does the job when you come in from a night out

Oh, I forgot to say, they also don't wake you up at 4 a.m. like a curry or other fragrant dish can.

Summer holiday book recommendations
at 19:05 5 Sep 2024

If it's not too late, and if you are going somewhere with a chance of a lot of rain, I would recommend Sapiens. It is such a good book. It basically explains how the economic, religious, social and political transformations which the species has lived through are to a large extent by products of our animal instincts and need to create institutions which assist in allowing us to cope with the old time honoured fight or flight scenario. After reading the chapters on how we create these economic, religious, social and political machines to enable us to connect it really sheds so much light on the world we live in. Amazing book.

Random irritations..

Friends/guests who rearrange things when they stay in your house.

I know it sounds a bit Jack Dee/Jo Brand but it is totally infuriating.

Nearly as bad as when you get a tradesman round to quote for something and you know he's ripping you off, he knows he's ripping you, but you get beaten on your own home soil and end up paying the f*cker.

Defending crosses
at 14:06 1 Sep 2024

Good analysis on the crosses. Been like that for a long time - since Bidwell at least. I always thought the entire back four should shuffle across. Works at Sunday League level. I'm guessing pro defenders don't have bobbles, divots and shanks to help them out like on a Sunday morning.

I think Marti is being a bit sutbborn here keeping Marsden on. This game is being played at 100 mph - but Marsden isn't.
