Fair enough and I guess at 23 the club gambles on him going from £5m to £15m (made up numbers for sake of argument) and getting another good season out of him. A bad gamble in hindsight but I think an understandable one at the time.
But right now, where we are and he is, what is he doing? Can forgive getting outclassed by the two they had in midfield plus Azaz but just the basic levels of effort aren’t there IMO. The second goal should embarrass him. |

If Varane could accept he’s down the pecking order at a probably mid-table second division club as he enters what should be his peak seasons he might get somewhere. He’s wanted a move from about five minutes after he arrived and in the position you can phone it in least of all just can’t be bothered more often than not (as I see it, perhaps he’s just unfit, crap or whatever). Barcelona aren’t picking up the phone. Put some graft in. |

The main issue both yesterday and Birmingham, amongst others, was that the middle of midfield was weak as piss. I can live with Poku not being much help going backwards if he does plenty with the ball (he did nothing with it, as is often the case away) but you lose the middle of midfield and you tend to lose the game. Once they’d sussed ours was crap they took advantage.
We all like Kamara but I don’t think he’s athletic enough, away from home to a good team, to play in a two. Varane… well Varane doing Varane things mostly ten yards out of position and ahead of the ball. I get options were limited, it’s a kid or JCS to come in and make the midfield more solid with Edwards but that was always a big risk going to Southampton with just Kamara and Varane just as it was going to Birmingham with Vale/Kamara. We’ve only got one midfielder you’d trust away from home in a two and he was injured for both. |

He looked weak but being so open albeit excellent at times with the ball first half was a big ask of him. Not helped by the absolute donkey alongside him. Remarkable how poor Varane was. He’s had terrible games but that second half he would have shamed a Sunday league team.
Fancied us at 1-0 but once we didn’t score by half time always expected them to be better. Not that it excuses that second half but the first I thought was more than good. Two deflected goals, one awful bit of marking and couldn’t finish. |

I wouldn’t be averse to him playing the same trick with Smyth up front/off of Kone. Felt at Birmingham, amongst the various issues, there was next to no threat in behind so they were able to step up. Just forcing their defence back ten yards would be good and means that ball in behind is either on or there’s more space in the middle. |

Surprised he’s only 34. Played like he was 34 a decade ago but as unattached players go there’s not much about. If it’s him and Robinson at the back they’ll have to defend on the six yard line. Carlton Morris stood in the centre circle getting more and more irate as the ball is launched at his face from 50 yards away. |

Tremendous news for the mighty Bwood. Now ten points clear. Feels like it’ll finally be the year already.
Not so fond memories of our failing to score against nine at Luton. Obviously didn’t score but did beat Chelsea’s nine with 45+ minutes against them. Can’t recall any team scoring twice and not conceding with nine against eleven. Both reds were early after Carlisle went one up. |

They lost the Kabore game and O’Hare didn’t come off the bench (perhaps they realised late he couldn’t) so I don’t think any deduction could be considered fair though that’s very subjective. Gets interesting in theory if Wrexham nick the last playoff place by a goal or something like that. |

I guess they should be at home with the team they have and in good form but I’ve always found them (in limited experience of knowing real life Southampton fans admittedly) to be a bit of a deluded bunch for a club that has never really done anything. Worse fan bases for that (Birmingham).
The Chapel is ok. Better in the city for those going by train. Pleasant enough place. |

Also one in the first half where Kemper had a right go at the linesman and most referees either ignore it entirely or book him. Gave him a proper headmaster’s talking to in a way most of the flannels in this league wouldn’t be capable of. |

Didn’t think either team could complain about much. Quite a nasty tackle from them and silly retribution from Smyth after not being given a fairly obvious foul we probably get at 0-0. Penalty he gives himself a second but it’s a fairly easy and correct call. Not his hardest day’s work. |
