What a fantastic midfield player. Their captain 26. Looks very at home against Palace and simply outmuscling their midfield and with plenty of skill. Good little cup game this.
As you say if Madsen gets injured we are criminally short of playmakers.
Chair is now relentlessly injured and Morgan is only 19, although I have very high hopes for him. If we could put Barry Bannan in a time machine and take 10 years off his age that would be one option, but it has to be a priority to find another playmaker, somewhere.
I like Varane but the Saint-Etienne deal is for a loan with a view to buy. We can't risk that. If they stomp up £5m then it's a serious consideration for us and the player. We do have Field, Hayden, Morgan and Edwards who can play that role.
The other thing is to either try and tie down RND or find another equally mature left back, as realistically Esq is not good enough yet, which just leaves Field, who is fine there but out of his natural position.
Also to say that the much slated Nourry does at least seem to have the financial side of the club under control. Everything is a gamble but if he does move on Varane for £5m, a player that cost us just over £1m then he would have balanced his books. Even if he doesn't do that then like him or not, behind the scenes he's doing a good job.
I think Varane is happy here. At least let him play here until the end of the season and then I guess it is up to him. He's had a very in and out season so far but when he is good he's very good. Why loan him out with a view to a sale, that may not come. If they are that intent on him they can come back for a chat at the end of the season. Definitely shouldn't be in a try before you buy situation here.
I'm actually excited that Bennie and Kolli may get their chance. I've seen Bennie play in the Dev squad and he really is a cut above. Like Kolli he knows where the goal is and like Burrell he has lightning pace. I think he could be an unexpected star.
I note the last line of the report there where Nourry says: Obviously to finance this transfer we are asking fans over the age of 60 to liquidate their pensions!
Although, he's 22 so hopefully he has time to get his match minutes up and rediscover the form he had with us last time. I feel reasonably confident and slightly terrified at £4.5m.
The good thing is that we know he can read the game well at CB and I take from this that perhaps JCS's days are numbered in terms of being relied on to play more than a handful of matches. Edwards could also become a Declan Rice type player for us as well. For me he was (and I hope will be) the closest player we've had to Glenn Roeder.
Poku is the most worrying because it keeps happening to him. Similar to the endless problems Willock had. I agree he looks very good when he can limp onto the pitch.
At least the Burrell one may not be as bad as we thought and sensible to not rush him back.
Yes I would imagine it is until the end of this season. Good, if Nardi is okay to stay then we have two good keepers and Walsh, who I think will be good, can perhaps go on loan to get match minutes?
Great report Clive. Big respect to the Wednesday fans for making the trip and getting behind their team. Love that they joined in the Hi Ho Silver Lining song at the end, just to try and remember what a win felt like. Fair play to them. As you said, no fans deserve what their scumbag owner did to their club.
As for us, watching our players go down was like the first 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan, except the beach in Normandy was in better shape than our pitch.
I believe, from what I heard, that Nardi came in for the Norwich game because Hamer had a bit of an issue with his face.
I do feel a bit for Nardi. He was really good last season for us but it appears the not coming for crosses thing has been a problem for the powers that be. An amazing shot stopper.
