Kind of inevitable after their recent run but harsh on the eve of Christmas. Brutal game sometimes. I thought he'd done quite well. Kept them up last season. Certainly not down and out in 22nd.
Chair, Smyth, Dembele, Saito, Poku, Vale. And then Kolli and Bennie. Not a bad problem to have for once.
I am usually (always) wrong about these things, but every time I see Bennie play I think, blimey, this kid's got the lot. He reminds me of Wayne Fereday. He could probably do with a loan to a League 1 team to get senior minutes but he's 19 and he's so comfortable on the ball, makes very good decisions and seems to have that very relaxed instinct in front of goal. Plus he also has devastating pace like Burrell (and Fereday). Now I have said this he'll probably be sold for a sausage roll and a KitKat to a Sunday league team. I do have big hopes for him.
I thought when Poku arrived that he was another quite diminutive player in stature but he's 5 foot 10 and a bit of a unit like Mbengue. I think the club has done very well to try and ease him into game time. He's been incredibly unlucky with hamstring injuries. Willock had much the same issues but seemed to come back too soon and play too many minutes.
I am hopeful with Poku. I think he could be something very special. I kind of Andy Impy Mk2 all being well.
I really like Stephan. I really like that he never gets too carried away or too worried by anything. I like that he has the respect of the players, even if they don't play as much as they want. I like the fact that he coaches a squad and not just his favourite 11. I like that if someone doesn't quite train right they are in the stands with the fans that week. I like that he seems easy going but he obviously has a bit of bite about him and can be ruthless.
However... the acid test of just how good we can be and how far we go is also determined by what QPR turns up at Portsmouth, West Brom and at home against Norwich. Particularly Portsmouth. The kind of game we tend to not show up for on a Boxing Day date we rarely get much from. Get a result against Portsmouth and you start to think, okay, what can this team do? Whimper to a 1 or 2-0 defeat against a team we really should put to the sword and it's well, we're doing fine but we're still not as ruthless as we need to be and we still struggle in these types of situations.
But, overall, this season and this manager are both exceeding expectations. Long may it last.
And it appears you have to cut and paste this in for some reason?
If you do...
The amazing thing is the Stephan seems to know that Dembele will score before he even shoots! Marti progressively trudging back to his dug out after each goal with a 'beam me the f*ck up' face. Stephan's amazed reaction, along with many others to Mbengue's blockbuster 4th!
I think to be fair your last sentence sums it up. We have 6 days. He used the subs late yesterday to make sure the potential of Leicester snatching a few goals didn't happen. For me bringing on Poku and Smyth shows how far we have come this season, to be able to replace two wingers with two wingers of quality.
I think the best compliment I can pay him is that last season he was nowhere and this season he is everywhere. The engine we didn't think he had he most certainly has. Very pleased for him because he said in the close season he felt he had let himself and the fans down. This season he's the first name on the team sheet.
Let's face it Marti kept us in this division for a few seasons. For that we should be thankful because it looks like keeping us up has given us the platform to strive for something a bit better than just staying up.
Thank you Marti. Glad we beat you but thank you Marti.
I thought he was on a season long loan to us but I guess they may have a recall? Would be a great shame, he's like a left sided David Bardsley. Really dependable and solid. I guess the only thing is that Field would be a natural replacement and he is also pretty solid at left back.
I agree though with a few on here. If we are buying a player in the new year I would prefer to make RND a perm here.
Through decades of watching Rangers play that side of the pitch has always been a problem. There must be some kind of subsidence or something going on. I remember Trevor Francis going down that wing and it looked like a ploughed field. There must be some kind of historical drainage issue?
I think we got a glimpse today of what Dembele can really do. What a player Mbengue is at right back. Absolutely terrifying to play against and making far better decisions than he was at centre back. Mbengue having his own disco by the end of this interview.
I still worry that we need perhaps to change shape and have Varane and Hayden sitting in front of the back 4 with Madsen in front of them and perhaps two wide and one up top. Would potentially make us tougher in central midfield.
