I think beating Gateshead, Wealdstone then the 3-0 against what looked like our main 7th,6th place rival Altrincham gave us some great momentum going into the Oldham game. Then we had Birds wonder goal and a real chance to push on again but missed chances and overplaying rather that shoot on goal scuppered us again - we went defensive for the last 20 mins and Birds injury and substitution ultimately led to Oldham equalising. We've never really recovered since. Hopefully they can snap out of this slumber tomorrow and realise what a great chance they have to make history.
I'm not sure about saving players for the cup game? Bird was injured at Oldham, limping quite badly at the end and he really shouldn't have played against Boston on the Tuesday. He's made it worse and now according to Jim's vague interview it's a 'significant injury' and we may or may not see him again? I do hope he's being over dramatic because I really dont see us making the playoffs otherwise.
I agree, as bad as he is you shouldn't be cheering him off the pitch when he's subbed - we do need him in our current predicament and who knows - he may score the goal that takes us to Wembley! One thing that doesn't endear him to the supporters though - he always looks miserable!
I mean great he's our leading scorer and all that but where is his next goal coming from? He had his finish from 1 yard away at Tamworth, and a miss hit that bobbled over the keeper v Altrincham. Other than that recently he's been woeful. Missed a great chance early on v Oldham at home, missed a great chance to wrap up the game at Oldham away. Even last night early on he had the chance to flick in Buyabu's cross and put it out for a goal kick, had a header which instead of going towards goal went nearer the corner flag. His hold up play is next to non existent, he struggles to win anything in the air despite his height, he gets outmuscled by defenders and as TalkingSutty eloquently put it his first touch is invariably a pass. He's obviously pissed off that Bird has come in and made him look even worse but the first chance he had to prove everyone wrong at Maidenhead because of Bird's injury he went missing for 90 mins.
Well I've seen enough games without him in the team to know which I prefer. Just hope he can play again this season especially if its an extended one. Jim was quite vague about his injury and wasn't really pressed to elaborate any further - if its a metatarsal then he probably wont play for us again.
Well we drew with Halifax and Oldham and beat Gateshead and Altrincham. The obvious elephant in the room is Jay Bird - with him joining and being able to 'rest' Mitchell it changes our play so much and we became so much better upfront. If Bird had been fit we may have even taken an early lead last night and the game changes so much - but we'll never know.
I mean we are so lucky to still be in that 7th spot. Watched the Alty highlights v Solihull earlier and they were very unfortunate not to win. Went ahead with an absolute Worldy from Linney (try and watch it - its a thing of beauty). Then Solihull got the softest penalty and a very soft red card for an Alty player too.
Video Nasty. Jim says 'you get what you pay for' - we didn't against Ebbsfleet and Maidenhead, its really starting to irk now he mentions budgets every time we lose to a team 'with clout'.
