 | Forum Thread | Colchester United looking for an inspired victory against The Spireites at 02:07 20 Oct 2026
First of all, some good news for me, on 16 October I received an email from Jen Wright who is the Senior Business Development Manager at Hotlizard, she informed me that ‘The full video will be available to watch at midnight after the match has been played (EFL rules) and will cost one credit to view.’ So, with that in mind, I used one of my credits to purchase the stream and hoped that with a return of me watching the ‘Full Match Replay’, it would bring an upturn in the fortunes of The U’s! Col U lined up in their familiar 4-2-3-1 formation albeit with some personnel changes. The injury curse strikes again with Harry Anderson and Jack Payne both missing from the squad. This moved Digby back into his familiar midfield position alongside Jay Williams (although who would have thought that Digby would be the most advanced on a number of occasions when The U’s advanced forward). Frankie Terry came in at the back next to Tucker and Iandolo and Hunt got the nod at right-back over the returning KVY. Thorn on the right, Lubala on the left with Sesay supporting Ihionvien up top. “Tough game, probably deserved the win” – Wessex-exile “Looked solid, but unspectacular.” – bewildered “defo need to improve our finishing” – CrashBandicoot ” Vast improvement compared to Newport.” – noah4x4 The above quotes from the U’sual faithful sum up the thoughts of all Col U fans I would imagine. Daniel posted up the Extended Highlights – I wouldn’t bother watching. So, onto tonight’s (tomorrow morning for some of us) match versus Chesterfield. Known as the Spireites after the town's Crooked Spire, Chesterfield are currently 7th in League Two after a 1-0 loss at Port Vale. Although 13 places above The U’s in the league, they are only 4 points in front having played a game more as well! Which just goes to show how tight the League 2 table is in the early stages (5pts separate Chesterfield in 7th and Rotherham in 23rd!). Liam Mandeville is the only current ‘Former U’ that now plays for Chesterfield. Signed by John McGreal on loan from Doncaster Rovers in the 2017-2018 season, Mandeville played 7 (1 start and 6 as sub) for The U’s. I clearly remember McGreal beating on about Mandeville being a 1 in 3 goalscorer at this level – so maybe 2 more starts for him would have seen him score at least 1 goal for us instead of the 0, in an uneventful season for Col U! There are 30 people in total that have played for both. Take a peek at Col U data for more info. Talking of the Col U Data website, it tells me that Col U and Chesterfield have played each other 66 times (38 Tier 3, 26 Tier 4, 2 FA Cup) with Col U winning 28 times to Chesterfield’s 20. One of those defeats came at Chesterfield’s old stadium (Saltergate) on Saturday 9 January 1999. As a young, just turned 15 year-old, I cannot remember too much of the match itself, but what I do remember is hearing my mate telling another teenager before the match that he will score that day, and low and behold after being introduced to the faithful in the 71st minute, an eighteen-year-old Lomana Trésor Lua-Lua duly obliged to score in the 75th! It turned out to be only a consolation goal in a 3-1 defeat. However, a star was born! Boy, could we do with Lua-Lua starting tonight’s match! Without him though, it is up to a forever-young Jack Payne to return from injury and into his rightful Number 10 position and fire The U’s to a first away victory this season! Let’s go for: GK: Lo-Tutala RB: Hunt CB: Tucker CB: Terry LB: Iandolo RM: Sesay CM: Jay Williams CM: Digby LM: Lubala AM: Payne ST: Ihionvien Subs: Roberts, KVY, Kuffour, Perry, Thorn, Harvey, Jaden Williams (back from suspension) However, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Digby drop back into a 5 across the back and Payne back in alongside Jay Williams in a 5-4-1. Score Prediction: A very optimistic 0-1 win with a Payne penalty stealing the points for The U’s! Safe journey to all those going or already up there |

Colchester United have progressed in the Essex Senior Cup, beating Maldon & Tiptree 2-0 at the JobServe Community Stadium: https://www.cu-fc.com/news/202 'First half goals from Leon Chiwome and Jaden Williams gave them the two goal lead at half time, a lead that they never really looked like relinquishing. Ben Perry got another sixty minutes of action as he returns from his knee injury, whilst Frankie Terry, Jaden Williams, Adrian Akande and Leon Chiwome were all involved.' |

Derby County 1-1 Wrexham The Rams made a dream start from a counter attack as Mo Fuseini found Sam Szmodics who spectacularly rifled beyond Anthony Patterson from 20 yards out for his fourth goal of the campaign after just nine minutes. Phil Parkinson's side equalised in the 88th minute as Kieffer Moore nodded Danny Imray's cross into the path of Rathbone who converted from close range. |

Anthony Scully says his debut goal for Exeter City was one of the greatest moments in his career: https://www.bbc.com/sport/foot "Scully had been a free agent since leaving Shrewsbury Town in the summer having had an injury-hit few years after a successful spell at Lincoln City. "It was one of the best feelings I've had in my life today," he told BBC Sport. "That moment was one of the best feelings I've had in a long, long time. All the hard work and to get a moment like that - I couldn't be prouder. "I've had some tough, tough times, so to keep pushing and keep going - as you have to do in football - and then to get a moment like today that was really special for me," he added. "Today was like months and years of setback, setback, keep going, so that's the top for me that goal." |

FORMER Colchester United winger John-Kymani Gordon has signed for Central Coast Mariners. The 23-year-old, released by the U's at the end of last season, has signed for the Australian A-League side. "Coming to Australia and joining the Mariners is a completely new challenge for me, but that was a big part of what attracted me to the opportunity. "I've had some really good experiences in England and now I want to come here, play football, and show what I can bring to the team. "I've heard a lot about the Mariners, the supporters, and how important the club is to the local community. "I'm looking forward to meeting the boys, getting out on the pitch, and hopefully giving the fans plenty to be excited about." The winger made 67 league and cup appearances for Colchester during his two years at the JobServe Community Stadium, arriving in the summer of 2024 from Crystal Palace. The former Carlisle United loanee, who spent pre-season with Johnnie Jackson's AFC Wimbledon, concluded last season on loan at National League side Rochdale. Up the Wahs! Sorry, should be 'Up the Pheonix!' |

FORMER U'S: Ex-Colchester United defender signs for National League high fliers: FORMER Colchester United defender Will Wright has joined National League leaders Boreham Wood. The 29-year-old joins the Hertfordshire club from Barnet on a three-year deal. Wright told the Boreham Wood FC website: "It's all very exciting. "It's obviously a very exciting time for the club, for myself and for the fans. "Hopefully the club can go one better and hopefully I'm here to help that and we can achieve the obvious goal the club has set out." Wright joined Colchester from Hitchin Town in 2017 and regularly played for their under-23s under Wayne Brown. In October 2017, he first joined the U's senior squad for a Football League Trophy match against Gillingham. He joined Dagenham & Redbridge permanently in summer 2019 after a successful season-long loan, having made no senior appearances for Colchester. Wright made nearly 150 appearances for the Daggers over four years, scoring seven goals before joining Gillingham in summer 2022. He spent a year with the Gills before joining Crawley Town , where he made more than 50 league and cup appearances. He then joined Swindon in summer 2024. Wright spent two years at Swindon, making nearly 100 league and cup appearances, many as captain, before joining Barnet in summer 2025. Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard said: "Will is someone I have admired for some time, he has real quality in possession of the football and is a perfect fit for our style and the way we play. "He brings a wealth of experience having been in the EFL for the last five seasons and he is coming into his twilight years, and we know we can get the best out of him. "He joins a very competitive squad and will bring much-needed competition in our defensive unit. "I look forward to seeing him play and progress with us and no doubt he will fit in seamlessly into the group on and off the pitch." Wright joined Barnet on a free transfer after being released by Swindon Town at the end of last season. |

FORMER Colchester United favourite Gavin Massey has announced his retirement. The 33-year-old attacker, who played for the U's between 2012 and 2016, has confirmed he is hanging up his boots. Writing on social media, Massey said: "After 16 years in the professional game it's definitely the right time to retire from football. "Football has been such a massive part of my life with having many highs but also many lows. "From starting out at 6 to making my professional debut at 17, playing 565 games, to winning leagues, to being relegated. "All great experiences to now pass down to the next generations @masseyfootballacademy "Absolutely loved it. A dream to a reality. "Thankyou to everyone who's been a part of the journey!" Massey made 178 league and cup appearances for Colchester during his four-and-a-half year stint with the club, scoring 21 goals. With his skill, versatility and positive attitude, he quickly endeared himself to Colchester fans after initially arriving at the club as a fresh-faced teenager on loan from Watford in January 2012, snapped up by John Ward. Massey twice scooped the Colchester United 'Players' Player of the Year' accolade before leaving to join Leyton Orient, in 2016. |
