It’s a tricky one for me because there’s a lot to like about him.
I don’t think he’s technically good enough to make it long term as a champ regular but that doesn’t mean I don’t value what he brings to the table.
The problem for me is im never confident in a goal scoring situation that he will score (and nor is he).
Having said that he’s made some chances for himself tonight so if he did improve his finishing he’d be a more viable long term option.
Can’t deny the combo of him an Burrell gave Cardiff problems though….
And I’d love nothing more than for him to keep developing! |

On reflection, and removing my qpr hat for a moment, what a fun game to watch from an attacking perspective.
Two teams trying to score goals to win the game rather than playing not to lose.
Some of our attacking combos snd movement was sumptuous. To me, there’s a clear progression in style of play and identity from last season, with more players in the squad who can execute.
Not perfect obviously, but it’s early in season and I think we’ll get better. The style does leave us a bit open and we might occasionally get too deep, let’s see if that improves over time.
Much rather be wondering when we’re going to take one of our chances rather than wondering when the next chance is coming.
I recall Lamptey doing well for me briefly in fantasy league when he first burst onto scene at Brighton. Never did I think he’d end up with us, and when it happened I felt sure he’d be much diminished. But so far the signs are very good. Let’s hope he can stay fit and maintain form.
So much to like overall, Boro will of course be a step up in test. Intrigued to see how we fare. |

great performance, love the approach, attitude, etc. absolutely should have killed it off but clung on without major scares.
appreciated cardiff's enterprising style of play, contributed to a good game and i think they'll do ok this season.
lamptey stays fit he'll have a kyle walker style season here |

we were too deep, the first instruction to subs must surely have been get us playing higher
cardiff are good going forward - fair play to them for their style - so i think we'll need another to win this |

We’ve been better side. Didn’t make the most of a great opp for chair Kone a moment before.
Ah, the modern keeper. Can hit shitpingers. Can’t catch. Even if they’re good with their feet relative to other keepers, they’re likely the worst in the squad. Yet the whole gameplan relies on them being a playmaker. It’s madness.
Mini unhinged rant over.

Attritional game for both teams, everyone looks shattered
Happy we finished the stronger
some more learning for the young ones:
Walsh (again) got his positioning wrong for their goal, overcovering - decent wrong foot finish but still, he can and will do better. Good distribution and command of box all game though.
Bennie - something I like about this lad, his movement / positioning is instinctively good, but he'll know he should have scored at least once. Header not bad could have been better, final chance pretty bad, got to do better. Feels like he didn't commit to where he was going to put it and caught in two minds. We know he can strike a ball well, and he held his position in space well to get the chance.
Don't get me wrong, I want the youngsters in the team and to see them succeed, and I don't expect them to be perfect - just things to work on that you want to see improve over time.
Smyth again most threatening player overall.
Could have won, maybe should have won with a bit better performance especially first half, but glad we came back into it and didn't give up. Point is fine. |

I will support him and hope that he develops into a really good champ keeper. There’s no jar continuing to play him for the rest of season.
I do have a nagging doubt that he lacks some fundamentals (for this level) which are hard to materially improve with coaching / experience. Namely his positioning and decision making can leave a lot to be desired. Thought positioning was poor for Leicester goal and it was poor for Wrexham winner at LR and any number of other occasions.
To be fair he has also had some good games and made some storm saves. He’s decent at rushing out to make blocks one on one - it’s the long distance stuff that seems to trouble him. Crosses he’s average, no worse than Nardi but I’d rate them both average at best.
Will be an interesting decision end of season. |

Big credit to players for the effort. Kone has looked exhausted often but there he was creating his own goal in stoppage time by closing down and deflecting Hill player’s pass that he then took a third of the length of pitch and calmly finished having missed two excellent chances. I like that spirit.
Hull are one of the better sides in this league the table doesnt lie in February, with a squad that on paper many would be envious of. And we’ve deservedly won.
Thrilled for Bennie. Goal and all round contribution very good. Yes Hull were open and mistake prone but he picked and executed right option most times. May I remind everyone he is just 19, Kolli is 21, Ronnie, Kone, and Vale are 22. Theyre going to be streaky for now, but they can already compete in this league, and should be among its better players in 2-3 years with consistent appearances. [Post edited 21 Feb 16:08]

Painful one because we looked decent early on and when we equalised. I thought we’d go on to win. All three conceded very bad goals.
Ronnie got to score from 1 yard with a smash not a toe poke, the momentum and 11 mins injury time could have got us a draw.
But overall hugely disappointing. Blackburn maybe a little more energy with new manager on the touchline.
Some wicked dead ball deliveries from Vale towards the end I’d like to see more of that. |

Yes this is bit odd. At least it (probably) shifts out a wage burden we don't want?
Not thrilled about this as I like him as a player for a specific job and he's been a servant to us - great pro so far as I can tell - but it's what we have to do. Depending on the fee (if it gets to that), you could argue he's been a success of the system. Sign a good player with some issues (injuries in his case) at a reasonable age, rehabilitate and prove his worth, sell on at higher fee in prime years. [Post edited 2 Feb 19:36]

That’s two really encouraging home performances on the trot against decent sides. Obviously not the result v Wrexham but that was a freak situation though one we contributed to - other than the last 2 mins overall I thought we were good value for the win
Today’s game, couldn’t be happier, result was what the performance deserved. Thrilled for the players because you can see the effort and today we put together some great passages of play, scoring from two of them.
Madsen I hope will go on a scoring run which is the only thing he has been lacking recently - superb again. No dud performances. Like Vale at 10 a lot, give him more games there and he’ll grow into the role even better. He has technique and vision that serves him and us well in that spot.
Bennie is young and learning, some encouraging signs were positioning / pace / physicality, some things to work on snatching at chances when he had more time, making decisions more quickly, and of course marking for their goal. But he had an integral part in both goals: his nice ball inside to Vale who then released Madsen for the first, and his run into the box to meet Vale’s cross that forced their keeper to intervene.
As an aside, seen a few comments about moaning at players etc. I was at Arsenal Man Utd last week (for work!) and I was astonished at how negative the Arsenal crowd were. If they took more than 3 seconds to take a throw in the crowd were on their back. Absolutely mad - horrible atmosphere to play in for the players if you ask me. Get behind your team, come on the message boards to moan if you must!! |

All would have been beneficial. I thought the conditions, timing, snd tbe injury list made it attritional and low quality.
The single thing id have wanted us to be better at is making better choices when the rare promising situations developed. Particular example at end when Vale kicked the ball to spring a 3 on 3 counter, but there were others. We almost always chose the wrong or a rushed option. In games like these yoi have to make them count.
Those are situations that you can take reps in training for and you need a cool head during games for.
Flew in for it all the way from Cleveland OH. Overnight flights Monday, train up to Oxford, sat in Oxford end, stayed overnight in Oxford including a miserable wait in the rain for the bus back. the other game ive managed this season was…Oxford at home. Which I think might have been even worse…. |

I'd get Vale on for Esquerdinha, Field to left back, Vale in the position Field currently playing (a sort of 8-10 combo). Gets the bodies in the right spots, but with a ball player in the 8-10 position who can contribute to attacks in a way Field can't. And strengthens left back position.
Smyth and Burrell on later to harass them and be dangerous on counter.
To be honest I'd take the game ending now and everyone going home early!! |

Having the 2 up top really makes things happen. Creates space. Occupies defenders. Means balls like that have a higher chance of reaching our players in dangerous spots.
Not rocket science but sometimes feels like it! How many times in seasons past would that ball have found 1 striker and 4 defenders?
Might mean we're a bit more open but much more exciting to watch that's for sure! |
