Having read some of the comments on here, it is clear not many of you have played the game at a decent level. We have no Paddy McCourts or Will Buckleys at the club, everyone on the team has the footballing brain, and everyone on the team is a grafter, Hendo, Vincenti, etc. Talent is no substitute for hard work and unless of course your representing the likes of Brazil, Spain etc then hard work will always come before talent. 90% of footballers get results from hard work. Real Madrid, Liverpool, Barcelona: all three have a mix, they have the grafters, and then the 10% from Ronaldo, Messi, Suarez that can make the difference. If you had 11 of them on each team, I would not expect them to win once. George Donnelly causes havoc, his runs off the ball create space, his runs in behind cause problems, his ever lasting energy does'nt let defenders breathe, he holds the ball up, all of the points create goals, he also chips in with a few goals to. If he did not do any of those points then fair enough, but he does. I think some of you forget the past, it was only last season that people moaned about the effortless performances of the players. Their lack of desire to compete to win football matches for Rochdale football club. It is a pleasure to pay hard earned money to watch the likes of George Donnelly give 120%, we would'nt of done it without him. It is only Keith Hills opinion that matters afterall. If George has 'no footballing brain' I cannot quite fathom out how he could possibly put over the cross (way out on the right with his left foot from memory) which brought Hendo's equalising headed goal at Cheltenham, put Joe Bunney in for our equalising goal at Bristol Rovers and produce a superb volleyed pass to send Hendo away on the left wing to set up our first goal in the last match against Cheltenham I agree George isn't the greatest goalscorer we have ever had but Hilly doesn't have him in the team for that | | | |

The whole 'footballing brain' thing isn't when a player is completely incapable of contributing and producing instances of excellent play, it's having an overall picture of the game around you. In Donnelly's case this is shown when he has the ball at his feet with options around him. Far too often the wrong option is chosen and more often than not the choice he makes is to run the ball into areas where opposition players are covering/about to cover space. His sending off at Accrington was a good example of this. I'll add setting up Allen v Plymouth of when he's got it right, but far too often the thought process in his general play is well off. You can teach it, but it required a player who takes on board the coaching and advice and continues to improve. | |

I wouldn't fancy him playing against us, he doesn't know what he's going to do, so how would we have any idea? He's a nuisance to the opposition and the way he celebrated the goal at Newport said it all. Not sure I've heard much more than total support for Donnelly at games. Would go as far to say that he gets a little bit more than others at times - especially when he's coming on as sub. Nobody should doubt he can be a nuisance, but his overall contribution and whether we could do better is what's up for debate. As things stand he's a Dale player as his contract had an option for him to remain, so fans will back the manager's decision when he's involved, as always;he certainly used Donnelly effectively. As has been said, if that effectiveness decreases the situation will change and players will get moved on as they always have. | |
